As the gestational age increases, the pressure on the legs and lower body also increases. In the last trimester, the legs will often experience cramps and become swollen due to the appearance of varicose veins. But mothers don't have to worry because cramps and varicose veins will fade away after giving birth. Until then, there are a number of ways you can do to alleviate these foot problems. Light exercise and adequate rest in early pregnancy is proven to prevent foot problems from coming later in life.

The cause of leg cramps is sometimes not known, although there may be certain conditions that can trigger it. However, leg cramps are one of the conditions most commonly complained of by most pregnant women during pregnancy.

What to do if your leg is already sore?

Regular light exercise, especially on the ankles and legs will improve blood circulation so that cramps can be prevented. There are two kinds of exercises that pregnant women can do to reduce varicose veins, cramps, and fatigue in the legs.

Passive Leg Elevating

  1. Lie down, then use a pillow to support the legs so that they are positioned higher than the pelvis.
  2. Do it every night for about an hour. If possible, also do it occasionally during the day.

Calf Stretch

  1. Stand up, then place your hands and feet behind the chair.
  2. Drag one of the affected leg as far as possible, but keep the heel touching the floor.
  3. Bend the knee of the other leg. Relax.
  4. Return to starting position and repeat.

In addition to relieving cramps, regular stretching of the calves can help prevent the cramps from coming back.

Varicose veins on the legs can be treated with the following steps:

  • Avoid standing for long periods of time
  • Avoid sitting sila (legs crossed)
  • Avoid excess weight as this can increase pressure on the feet
  • Try to sit with your legs elevated as often as possible
  • Try using specialty products from pharmacies to support leg muscles
  • Sleep with your feet higher than your body, and use a pillow or book under your ankles for support
