The results of this study indicate that adolescents aged 14-17 years need 8-10 hours of sleep per night. This figure is higher than the previous recommendation, namely 8.5-9.5 hours per night.

Dr. DonCarlos and other experts on a multidisciplinary panel examined the findings of 320 studies reporting sleep duration, and they found a health effect of long sleep duration, which is a consequence of taking too long or getting too little sleep. The results are published in Sleep Health: Journal of the National Sleep Foundation.

"The process is very thorough," said Dr. DonCarlos, who represents the American Association of Anatomists from 6 sleep experts selected by the National Sleep Foundation.

"We still have to undergo further research to study sleep function. We know sleep is refreshing and important for memory consolidation, but we do not know in detail what the function of sleep is, even how we can spend ⅓ of our lives just sleeping, ”said Dr. DonCarlos.

How much sleep is ideal for me?

Although each age group has been grouped based on how long their recommended time to sleep, the National Sleep Foundation in its main report in Sleep Health Journal, mentioning that there is no perfect amount of time that fits everyone. Here are the recommended hours of sleep:

  • Newborn (0-3 months): 14-17 hours daily
