Normal delivery is the method of delivery that pregnant women crave. The reason is, vaginal delivery is considered to have a faster recovery process than cesarean delivery. So, you can leave the hospital sooner and soon have a wonderful time with your baby.
However, normal delivery is often equated with spontaneous delivery. Although both are vaginal deliveries, they are different, you know! So, what is spontaneous childbirth? Read on for the following reviews.
What is spontaneous labor?
Spontaneous labor is the process of vaginal delivery that takes place without the use of certain tools or drugs, be it induction, vacuum, or other methods. So, this delivery really only relies on the energy and effort of the mother to push the baby out. This delivery can be done with a percentage of the back of the head (fetal head born first) and a percentage of the buttocks (breech).
The difference between spontaneous labor and normal delivery
Spontaneous labor is similar to normal delivery, but the two are not the same. The difference lies in the use of tools and also the position of the baby being born.
As previously explained, spontaneous childbirth relies more on the mother's energy and effort. So, this delivery does not require induction, vacuum, or any other method to induce labor so that the baby can be born normally. Meanwhile, if labor occurs with induction or vacuum assistance, then this is a normal delivery.
The two types of delivery also differ in terms of the percentage or position of the baby at birth. In spontaneous labor, labor can occur in the back of the head (fetal head first) and the butt (breech) percentage. Meanwhile, with normal delivery, delivery is usually more to the back of the head.
How is the spontaneous delivery process?
The duration of the delivery process is not always the same for every pregnant woman. If you are having a baby for the first time, this process tends to last for 12 to 24 hours starting from the beginning of the opening. Meanwhile, if you have already given birth, the next delivery usually occurs sooner, around 6 to 8 hours.
Towards a spontaneous labor, you will experience three phases that are signals that you are ready to give birth, including:
- There is a rupture of the water which then causes contractions. As the contractions progress, the cervix will gradually expand until it is flexible enough to make it easier for the baby to pass from your uterus.
- When the opening reaches a diameter of 10 cm (opening 10), you will begin to be led to push by the doctor to push the baby down until he is born.
- Within an hour, you will give birth to the placenta, which is the organ that connects you and your baby to carry nutrients and oxygen through the umbilical cord during pregnancy.
However, not all pregnant women can immediately undergo spontaneous labor. There are several conditions that allow you to transition to a cesarean delivery if you experience the following:
- Placenta previa, which is a placenta that covers part or all of the cervix
- Herpes virus with active lesions
- Untreated HIV infection
- Have had a cesarean section once or twice or have had uterine surgery
Which must be prepared before undergoing spontaneous labor
Lately, there are many classes of pregnant women available that you can use to dig up information about the labor you desire. You can ask various kinds of things that might be your confusion and fear, including:
- How to know when you have a baby
- Possible complications that may occur during pregnancy and childbirth
- How to relieve pain, either by relaxation or epidural methods
- How to work with birth attendants
- Postpartum care (post natal care), including postpartum care
- How to care for babies, and so on
Towards delivery, keep yourself in a relaxed state, get enough food and fluids, and think positively. The reason is, feelings of fear, nervousness, and tension will release the hormone adrenaline which can slow down the labor process.
Convince yourself that you can go through every normal labor like women in general. Focus that soon you will meet the baby that you have been waiting for in order to speed up the labor process.
