What is the drug Teniposide used for?

Teniposide is a drug to treat leukemia and certain cancers. This drug is used with other anti-cancer drugs. Teniposide works by slowing down or stopping the growth of cancer cells.

How are the rules for using the drug Teniposide?

This medication is given by slow injection into a vein by a healthcare professional for at least 30 to 60 minutes, usually once or twice a week or as directed by your doctor. This medicine may cause low blood pressure. Tell your doctor or other health care professional if you feel dizzy. Your injection may need to be stopped or given more slowly.

Dosage is based on your medical condition, body size, and response to treatment. Your doctor will check your blood count to make sure you can receive your next dose. Make sure to keep all medical / lab results.

If this medicine is accidentally leaked into the surrounding tissue, the skin and / or muscles may be severely damaged. Tell your doctor right away if you feel pain or irritation at the injection area.

Call your doctor if you experience serious side effects such as the following:

• Fever, chills, hives, body aches, flu symptoms, sores in the mouth and throat
• Easy bruising, unusual bleeding (nose, mouth, vagina, or rectum), reddish or purplish spots under your skin
• Pale skin, lightheadedness or shortness of breath, fast heart rate, difficulty concentrating
• Rapid heartbeat, palpitations, wheezing, chest tightness, difficulty breathing
• Severe headache, ringing in the ears, anxiety, confusion, chest pain, irregular heartbeat
• Pain, burning, irritation, discoloration of the skin around the injection site
• Feel like passing out
• Nausea and vomiting

Less serious side effects may include:

• Mild headaches
• Drowsiness, dizziness, feeling tired or weak
• Mild nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite
• Constipation, diarrhea
• Temporary hair loss
• Mild skin rash

Can certain foods and drinks interfere with the work of the Teniposide drug?

Certain drugs should not be used with meals or when eating certain foods because drug interactions can occur. Consuming alcohol or tobacco with certain drugs can also cause interactions to occur. Discuss your use of drugs with food, alcohol, or tobacco with your health care provider.

What health conditions can interfere with the performance of the drug Teniposide?

Any other health conditions you have can affect the use of this drug. Always tell your doctor if you have other health problems, especially:

• Blood disorders due to bone marrow depression or

• Down Syndrome - Patients who have this condition may be more sensitive to this drug. Dosage can be increased.
• Hypoalbuminemia (low albumin in the blood) or
• Kidney disease, or
• Liver disease - Use with caution. The effect may be increased because the drug breaks down more slowly from the body.

What is the dose of Teniposide for adults?

Usual Dosage for Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia

For use in the treatment of patients with refractory acute lymphoblastic leukemia:

Patients failing induction therapy with a regimen containing cytarabine:

165 mg / m² by slow IV infusion and 300 mg / m² of IV cytarabine twice weekly for 8-9 doses.

Patients refractory to regimens containing vincristine / prednisone:

250 mg / m² by slow IV infusion and 1.5 mg / m² of IV vincristine weekly for 4 to 8 weeks with 40 mg / m² of oral prednisone for 28 days.

Usual adult dose for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma:

30 mg / m2 / day for 10 days

or

50-100 m2 mg / once a week as a single agent

or

60-70 mg / m2 / day once a week in combination with other chemotherapy agents.

What is the dosage of Teniposide for children?

This drug is used in combination with other approved anticancer agents, Teniposide is indicated for induction therapy in patients with refractory acute lymphoblastic leukemia in the following regimens:

165 mg / m² by slow IV infusion and 300 mg / m² of IV cytarabine twice weekly for 8-9 doses.

250 mg / m² by slow IV infusion and 1.5 mg / m² of IV vincristine weekly for 4 to 8 weeks with 40 mg / m² of oral prednisone for 28 days.

or

165 mg / m2 by slow IV infusion on days 1 and 2 weeks 3, 13, and 23

In what dosages and preparations is Teniposide available?

Injection 50 mg / 5 ml

What to do in an emergency or overdose?

In case of an emergency or overdose, contact the local emergency services provider (118/119) or immediately to the nearest hospital emergency department.

Overdose symptoms may include

• Slow breathing
• Excessive fatigue
• Slow or irregular heartbeat
• Confusion
• Fainting
• Dizzy
• Blurred vision
• Fever, sore throat, chills, cough that doesn't stop or other signs of infection
• Unusual bleeding or bruising

What should I do if I forget to take medicine or forget to take medicine?

If you forget a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, when it is nearing the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the usual dosing schedule. Don't double the dose.
