Initially, High-intensity focused ultrasonic (HIFU) was better known as a treatment for tumors because the ultrasonic waves can kill cancer cells.
However, it turns out that HIFU can also be used as a cosmetic procedure to tighten sagging skin without plastic surgery. Its function is similar to face lift, the difference is this treatment is non-invasive so it does not cause pain.
This treatment uses ultrasound energy that targets the deep skin layers to stimulate collagen formation. Later the ultrasound gel will be applied to the facial skin. With the help of the HIFU device, this gel will target skin cells and stimulate the release of proteins that make the skin tighter.
In addition, this treatment also reduces wrinkles on the face without damaging the top layer of skin.
The benefits for facial skin
One of the great things about this treatment is that you don't need to rest or adhere to certain restrictions. The method is quite instant, so you can just go out and do your activities back to normal afterward.
You will also feel the various benefits for facial skin, namely:
- Tighten sagging skin in the neck area and around the collarbone
- Reduces wrinkles on the face
- Raises the skin around the cheeks, eyebrows, and eyelids
- Provides a more defined jaw effect
- Smoothes facial skin
A study on patient satisfaction with the resulting effects after HIFU was also conducted in 20 patients in Korea. In the study, the team of doctors evaluated the improvement in facial skin and side effects clinically by comparing the patient's photos between before and after treatment.
Observations are focused by looking at changes in the eyebrow area, forehead, around the cheekbones, around the lips, chin, and jaw line. Study participants will be given a questionnaire after 3 months and 6 months of treatment and then fill out a satisfaction score from a scale of 1-5.
After three months, participants indicated satisfaction with treatment outcomes by scoring three or more. Some of the areas that have the highest satisfaction scores are the jaw, the area around the lips, and the cheeks.
Whereas in the second assessment carried out after 6 months, the level of patient satisfaction has decreased, except for the cheek area which actually increased than before.
However, most patients are happy with the effects obtained from HIFU and are interested in returning to treatment.
HIFU side effects
Care high-intensity focused ultrasonic classified as safe, as long as it must be done by someone who is already a professional in their field.
Compared to other skin treatments, there are not many side effects from HIFU.
Some people experience redness and swelling of the skin, some have bruises. However, these problems do not cause more serious complications and can disappear in about two weeks.
Another possible side effect is numbness, but this is also a rare case.
If you want results that are fast, practical, and without excruciating pain, HIFU treatment can be the right choice.
It's just that, you also need to know that the results you get from this treatment are not permanent and only last for a few months. You will still need re-treatment to make the results last longer.
