Planning to get pregnant again after a miscarriage is not easy. There will be a lot of questions going through your head. For example, when is the right time to get pregnant again, is it necessary to undergo a special pregnancy program after a miscarriage, and what is the risk of a second miscarriage.
However, don't let this discourage you. Every woman who has a miscarriage still has the opportunity to get pregnant again. It's just that, there are a number of things you need to pay attention to while planning a pregnancy again.
Steps to take after a miscarriage?
The first and foremost step you need to take after experiencing a miscarriage is to make sure the uterine cavity is clean by curettage. After that, you will need to undergo a series of examinations and evaluations by a doctor.
Examination and evaluation should be carried out as soon as possible to find the maximum cause of the miscarriage. Do not delay until the months after, as this will make it more difficult for your doctor to determine the factors causing the miscarriage.
The factors that cause miscarriage play a big role in determining the type of pregnancy program you undertake and the preparation for it after a miscarriage.
Several factors can cause a miscarriage, namely:
- elderly pregnant women
- abnormalities in the fetus
- deformities of the uterus and uterine cavity
- metabolic disorders such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.
However, many cases of miscarriage occur without a clear cause. Therefore, it is important to communicate with your obstetrician to prepare for the next pregnancy.
Are there any special checks that need to be done?
The evaluation carried out after a miscarriage is basically not much different from the screening for women planning a pregnancy.
The methods used can be transvaginal ultrasound, blood tests, MRI, and examination of the condition of the uterus. The method chosen will usually be adjusted by the obstetrician to the condition of each mother.
The best time to get pregnant after a miscarriage
The best time to plan a pregnancy varies from woman to woman, depending on the following factors:
1. Previous pregnancy
If the previous pregnancy was easy, then the next pregnancy should occur within 6 months to 1 year after the miscarriage. You don't have to delay getting pregnant again, as long as all the risks of pregnancy are under control.
For women who have just gotten pregnant after a few years of marriage due to fertility problems, you don't have to wait many more years to get pregnant again. It may be wise to go straight to an intensive pregnancy program as long as the cause of the miscarriage can be identified beforehand.
2. Risk of pregnancy
If you have diabetes, hypertension, and obesity, all of these conditions must be controlled before getting pregnant again. Uncontrolled risk factors can be dangerous for the mother and the fetus, even thwarting the pregnancy program after a miscarriage.
You can only get pregnant again safely after controlling blood sugar, normal blood pressure, and body weight to reach the ideal number. Therefore, the right time to get pregnant again will vary from woman to woman.
3. Cleaning the uterine cavity
There are two methods used to clean the uterine cavity, namely by curettage and drugs. The curettage method is usually preferred because all the remaining tissue in the uterus can be cleaned quickly, as well as the opportunity to leave less tissue.
On the other hand, cleaning the uterus with drugs is cheaper and easier. However, this method sometimes does not completely clean the uterus and thus requires a curettage in the end.
If the uterus is not clean, it will be difficult for the next pregnancy to occur. If there are complications such as infection and adhesions, of course, it will prolong the process of the next pregnancy.
Do you need to undergo a special pregnancy program after a miscarriage?
The pregnancy program consists of three types, namely natural, artificial insemination (IUI), and IVF. The pregnant program that will be undertaken will of course depend on the conditions of the husband and wife.
If previous pregnancies have occurred naturally, you can plan future pregnancies in the same way. Likewise for those of you who are pregnant with an artificial insemination program or IVF, you can immediately repeat the pregnancy program.
Each program has its own advantages, disadvantages, and risks. Regardless of the type of program you undergo, its success will depend on your efforts to control the various risk factors for pregnancy.
Tips to prevent miscarriage from happening again
After having a miscarriage, you will probably focus on finding a pregnancy program to plan your next pregnancy. However, make sure you also do various things so that the miscarriage does not happen again.
Here are some things I recommend to prevent miscarriage in the future:
- Perform pre-pregnancy checks to detect early pregnancy risks, including abnormalities.
- Control blood sugar, blood pressure, weight, and other conditions that can affect pregnancy.
- Eat a balanced nutritious diet and meet nutritional needs.
- Actively moving and exercising.
Husbands can also play an active role in several ways. Among others, stopping smoking, accompanying your wife to lead a healthy life, and maintaining an ideal body weight because obesity can reduce sperm quality and ultimately increase the risk of miscarriage.
You and your partner should also find out more about pregnancy preparation from trusted sources, for example from my book entitled "Papa Mama Is Ready to Get Pregnant".
In general, there is no specific pregnancy period or program you need to go through after a miscarriage. If your body and your partner are healthy, as well as other risk factors are controlled, then the next pregnancy can be planned immediately without delaying too long.
So, don't be discouraged. There is always a chance for you to try again.
