Edema or swelling is caused by excess fluid trapped in certain body tissues. Usually, this condition most often occurs in pregnant women which causes the feet to become swollen. However, it turns out that the types of edema are quite diverse and are usually grouped based on the location of the occurrence. The following is the review.

Types of edema in the body

1. Peripheral edema

This swelling usually occurs in the ankles, feet, hands, and arms. Apart from swelling, peripheral edema usually makes it difficult for a person to move that part of the body. Peripheral edema usually indicates problems with the circulatory system, lymph nodes, and kidneys.

2. Pulmonary edema

Pulmonary edema is a condition when the lungs have excess fluid, making it difficult for you to breathe. This condition usually occurs due to congestive heart failure or acute lung injury. People with pulmonary edema usually have a faster than normal heart rate, weakness, and a cough that is sometimes accompanied by blood.

These symptoms usually get worse when you lie down. Pulmonary edema is a serious, even medical, condition. The reason is, this edema in the lungs can cause respiratory failure and death.

3. Cerebral edema

As the name implies, cerebral edema occurs in the brain. This condition arises because of various triggers, such as when the head is hit by a hard object, a blocked or broken blood vessel, has a tumor, and an allergic reaction.

Cerebral edema is a life threatening condition. Symptoms usually include headache, stiff or sore neck, partial or complete memory loss, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.

4. Macular edema

Macular edema is a serious complication of diabetic retinopathy. This condition occurs when fluid builds up in the part of the eye called the macula, precisely in the middle of the retina. This occurs when damaged blood vessels in the retina leak fluid into the macula. As a result, swelling is inevitable. Macular edema usually makes a person experience visual disturbances, including seeing colors.

5. Edema pedal

Pedal edema occurs when fluid collects in the upper and lower legs. This condition most commonly affects people who are older or pregnant. Because of this, people with pedal edema usually have difficulty moving because their feet are often numb.

6. Lymphedema

Lymphedema is swelling in the arms and legs caused by damage to the lymph nodes. This damage occurs most often from cancer treatments such as surgery and radiation. In fact, cancer itself can also block lymph nodes and cause fluid buildup.
