Pregnancy can be achieved in a number of ways; natural fertilization by having sex or through the help of IVF programs, aka IVF. What distinguishes the two is how to reconcile sperm with egg cells. In the future, the pregnancy process that the prospective mother is going through will remain the same. However, it turns out that the method of calculating the estimated days of birth for IVF program is different from babies from natural pregnancies.
For women who are normally pregnant, estimated HPL is generally calculated from the last date of menstruation before conception. Then, what about the count of the HPL of pregnant women using IVF?
Overview of how to get pregnant through IVF
IVF or pregnancy in vitro fertilization This is done by taking a sample of an ovum or egg from a woman's uterus and sperm from a man's semen.
The sample will be examined further to select cells with the best quality. The doctor will then bring the two cells together in a petri dish in the laboratory
After the two cells are combined, the fertilization process will occur until the embryo is formed. The embryo will then be left to rest in a special sterile place.
Three to 4 days later, the embryo will be inserted back into the uterus to continue the pregnancy.
How to calculate HPL IVF?
How to calculate HPL in IVF pregnancy is different from normal HPL. In natural pregnancy, the HPL will be calculated from the first day of the last menstruation (HPHT). However, sometimes, natural pregnancy HPL like to slip because there is a tendency for pregnant women to forget exactly when they last had their period before becoming pregnant. So, the results of the HPL can change; either be faster or longer than calculated.
Meanwhile, the HPL of IFV pregnancy was not calculated based on the HPHT. The HPL of IVF starts from the date the embryo is transferred into the uterus until the next 266 days. This equates to 38 weeks of gestation.
Here's an example of an estimate:
- If the embryo transfer to the mother's uterus is carried out today, it means that the mother's HPL IVF will be 265 days later
- If the embryo transfer to the mother's uterus is done on day 5, it means that the mother's HPL IVF is 261 days later
- If the embryo transfer to mother's day is carried out on day 3, it means that the mother's HPL IVF is 263 days later.
HPL IVF prediction is usually more accurate because doctors can monitor embryo development from the laboratory. But chances are, the doctor will continue to monitor your pregnancy because the fetus that is being conceived may be a little late.
Babies from IVF pregnancies are at high risk of preterm birth
Although you and your doctor believe that the IVF HPL is accurate, according to a study from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Pennsylvania, babies from IVF pregnancies are at high risk for premature birth.
Doctors don't know exactly why babies born with IVF are at risk of prematurity. However, there are certain factors that can cause this condition to occur. Among others, such as:
1. Hormonal problems
Before the HPL is determined, the doctor will use the best embryo to be inserted into the mother's womb.
To get the best embryos, pregnant women will be given hormone drugs to increase the number of eggs that will be produced.
Now, some scientists believe that it is this hormone that is forced to mature which can affect the embryo implant in your uterus.
2. Multiple embryos
The expected day of birth for an IVF baby can be inaccurate if you are pregnant with twins or more. This is because doctors usually insert 2 or more embryos in one transfer process to the uterus. Multiple pregnancies or more generally have a higher risk of preterm birth than singleton pregnancies.
Because there is more than one embryo, the body will indirectly undergo two folds of many changes. For example, the mother's blood supply must be doubled to meet the needs of two babies. A heart that works hard to pump blood during pregnancy can lead to increased blood pressure or preeclampsia. Preeclampsia risks causing the baby to be born prematurely.
3. Physical Mother
Factors from the physical condition of the mother can also cause the IVF pregnancy to be born before the due date. Mothers who are pregnant through IVF tend to be no longer young, around the age of 30 years and over. Pregnancy that occurs in old age can cause many risks, one of which is premature birth.
