Everyone's normal urine varies widely. You can urinate up to ten times a day, and this is still fairly normal as long as there are no complaints whatsoever. However, if you feel that you are urinating too often lately, there may be certain factors causing this disorder.

Also known as polyuria, frequent urination can be caused by various factors. The cause can sometimes come from bladder disease or certain diseases that affect urine formation. What are some examples?

Various causes of frequent urination

Urine production can be affected by food and drink, medication, and the health problems you experience. In some cases, the cause of polyuria can also be psychological conditions such as nervousness or anxiety.

There are lots of conditions that can give you polyuria (frequent urination). Here are the most common.

1. Drinking too much water

Water is important for health, but drinking too much will actually make you urinate more often. This is because the kidneys try to remove excess fluid to maintain electrolyte balance in the body.

In order to stay hydrated, drink at least eight glasses of water a day. No need to worry about lack of fluids, because you can increase your fluid intake from foods with soup, vegetables and fruits.

2. Drink diuretic drinks

This is the most common cause of frequent urination. Alcoholic or caffeinated drinks such as tea, coffee, and soda are diuretics. This means that this drink adds to the salt and water levels in the urine so that more urine is produced.

When urine production increases, the bladder will fill more quickly. This is what makes you feel like peeing after drinking coffee or other diuretic drinks. Usually, the diuretic effect lasts for six to eight hours.

3. Taking diuretic drugs

Consumption of diuretic drugs aims to remove water and salt from the body through urine. These drugs are generally given to patients with hypertension and congestive heart failure, which often causes fluid buildup in the body.

Like when you drink caffeinated drinks, diuretic drugs will also make you pee more often. In addition, other possible side effects include dizziness, headaches, symptoms of dehydration, and a drop in blood sugar.

4. Diabetes

Diabetics often urinate in large quantities. This happens because diabetics have high blood sugar levels. The kidneys try hard to filter the blood and reabsorb the sugar that the body still needs.

Gradually, the kidneys will have difficulty filtering the blood so that the sugar comes out with the urine. Sugar in the urine attracts more fluid, so that more urine is formed. As a result, you urinate more often and are prone to dehydration.

5. Bladder infection

Another cause of frequent urination is an infection of the urinary system. When an infection occurs, the bladder cannot accommodate urine optimally. The bladder becomes full quickly, so you constantly want to pee.

If you have a bladder infection, you may experience other symptoms such as:

  • pain or burning sensation when urinating,
  • suddenly want to urinate,
  • urine that comes out only a little,
  • urine appears reddish, and
  • pungent-smelling urine.

6. Pregnancy

Pregnant women usually urinate more often. This is because their bodies produce more blood to meet the nutritional needs of the fetus. The kidneys of course have to filter more blood so that urine production also increases.

As gestational age increases, the uterus of the pregnant woman also develops following the growth of the fetus's body. The head of the fetus and the uterus that continues to grow can put pressure on the bladder, making pregnant women want to urinate frequently.

7. The bladder is overactive

Overactive bladder (overactive bladder) is a condition that makes it difficult to control the urge to urinate. People with an overactive bladder can urinate more than eight times in 24 hours, including in the middle of the night while sleeping.

Launching the Mayo Clinic page, there are a number of factors that can cause an overactive bladder, which are as follows.

  • Decreased bladder function due to increasing age.
  • Diabetes.
  • Urinary tract infection.
  • Nerve disorders, including those resulting from strokes and spinal cord injuries.
  • The presence of a tumor or stone in the bladder.
  • Inhibition of urine flow due to swelling of the prostate or constipation.
  • Frequent urination incomplete.

8. Disorders of the prostate gland

Some diseases of the prostate gland can cause swelling. The swollen prostate over time compresses the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body) and blocks the flow of urine.

Trapped urine can irritate the urethra and bladder. As a result, the bladder contracts more often even though there is only a little urine in it. This is what then causes frequent urination.

Do you need to see a doctor if you urinate frequently?

Frequent urination without other symptoms is usually not a big problem, especially if the trigger is related to your drinking habits. Conversely, do not ignore complaints of frequent urination accompanied by the following conditions.

  • Pain or discomfort when urinating.
  • Changed urine color or mixed with blood.
  • Loss of bladder control (urinary incontinence).
  • You often feel very hungry or thirsty.
  • Fever or chills.
  • Lower back or side pain.

These symptoms can indicate a more serious health problem. If you experience it, consult your doctor to find out why you urinate frequently.
