When the penis hurts, it must be a big problem for all men. Yes, penis health is, of course, one of the main concerns of men. How could they not, this organ that they are proud of is the most important reproductive organ. It is not uncommon for men to have problems with their penis because they don't keep the penis clean. One of the disease risks that can be experienced by men who do not keep their penis clean is balanitis.
What is balanitis?
Balanitis is an inflammation of the head of the penis, which often occurs in men who have not been circumcised. This disease causes symptoms such as penis pain, redness, swelling, odor, and pain when urinating.
Although balanitis is not a serious disease, all men - especially those who have not been circumcised - can develop balanitis. Balanitis can be experienced by men of all ages, but is more common in boys under 4 years. At least 1 in 25 children and 1 in 30 boys have balanitis.
What causes balanitis?
There are many things that can cause balanitis in men and the following are the causes.
1. Skin conditions
Balanitis can be a sign and symptom of other conditions that the penis is actually experiencing, such as:
- Lichen planus, which is a condition in which the skin becomes a rash, red, itchy surface of the skin.
- Eczema, is a chronic skin disease that can attack the surface of the skin of the penis. This condition is also characterized by dry, itchy, cracked, red skin.
- Dermatitis is inflammation that occurs on the surface of the skin that results from direct contact with things that irritate the skin.
- Psoriasis, a condition characterized by dry, scaly skin surfaces. This disease is caused by the immune system that cannot regenerate skin cells normally.
These four skin diseases can cause penis pain, pain, redness, and inflammation, resulting in balanitis. To treat balanitis, what must be done is to treat the skin disease that is the cause of the balanitis.
2. Inflammation of the penis
Inflammation and irritation that occurs on the surface of the foreskin can be caused by the following:
- Using condoms, lubricants, and spermicides (special contraceptives for men) that contain chemicals and cause skin allergies.
- The pants that are used still have detergent that hasn't been rinsed off properly. Detergents contain chemicals that can irritate the skin. If you wear pants that haven't been rinsed clean, the chemicals left in your pants can cause penis pain, pain, redness, and inflammation.
- Using a bath soap that causes allergies to the penis.
3. Experiencing infection
One of the main causes of balanitis is an infection that occurs in Mr.P. This infection can be caused by two things, namely:
Candida infection, namely a yeast infection that often causes inflammation in the body, for example, mouth sores. The infectious conditions caused by candida can cause penis pain, swelling, and irritation.
Bacterial infection, the surface of the human skin is full of bacteria. There are bacteria that are bad and cause disease, but some are not dangerous. Cleaning and washing the penis regularly every day and immediately drying the penis can reduce the risk of bacterial infection. However, you must pay attention to the soap used to clean Mr.P. If you choose the wrong bath soap, it actually makes the penis experience balanitis.
4. Diabetes
Balanitis occurs not only because of infection, but also because someone has had diabetes beforehand. Men who have diabetes are more likely to develop skin infections than those who do not have a history of diabetes. This is because glucose is in the urine and excreted through the penis, triggering the growth of bacteria around the penis.
5. Phimosis
In an uncircumcised penis, the head of the penis is covered with a layer of skin called the foreskin. In some cases, the foreskin is so tight that it cannot be pulled back over the head of the penis, resulting in phimosis. Phimosis is common in babies and boys.
6. Having unsafe sexual intercourse
Balanitis can occur in an adult male if he has unprotected and unhealthy sexual intercourse. If the female partner is experiencing an infection or wound in the vagina, then the man can be infected and is at risk of developing balanitis. Besides sexually transmitted diseases such as genital herpes, chlamydia, and syphilis can also cause balanitis.
