Humility is characterized by being polite, gentle, and simple. Humility itself is a characteristic of someone who actually has excess abilities, but is not arrogant or flaunts it. Humility is also an expression of gratitude. Unfortunately, not all children have this characteristic. You can teach humility to children as early as possible, so that later when they are older they will understand how to behave.
How to teach humility to children
1. Be a good example
Children can have a humble nature if they see their parents also have that quality. Therefore, model the qualities that are kind to your child.
You can apply this humble nature as a principle of your daily life and your family. Starting from the family environment first, children will get used to following good qualities too.
2. Create a humble calendar
Children need daily reminders to develop character. Make a humble calendar to record what your little one has done today.
You can use an old calendar or a blank back calendar. Then caption the calendar, "I can be humble today." Help the children fill in each day of the month with examples of humility.
Examples of humility might include helping a mother clean the room even though there is a household assistant at home, helping the mother to cook, thanking the janitor, or opening the door for someone.
3. Give compliments
If your child gets good grades or achievements in school, give your little one a compliment. However, if your little one gets bad grades, don't immediately scold or blame the teacher. That way it will be difficult to teach him humility. On the other hand, help and accompany your little one to study well, so that he can get even better grades without making him think that being the first winner is everything.
4. Invite children to share
Introduce children to sharing behavior. Invite children to share unused items with people in need. For example, you can clean up your wardrobe together to see which clothes don't fit anymore or are no longer used but still fit. Then collect the clothes and give them to the needy.
5. Learn manners
Humility is identified by how you respond to or respect others. Children need to be taught to say, “please” and “thank you” as much as they need.
Teach children to say thank you when given something and say help when asking for something. For that, you also need to do the same with your child.
6. Teach children to apologize
A sincere apology is the key to humility. Sometimes children make mistakes but they are afraid to apologize and they don't have the courage to admit their mistakes.
Therefore, if your child makes a mistake, don't get scolded right away. Ask him why he did it, explain to him gently. Then encourage your little one to apologize.
If you have instilled this behavior from childhood, then he will get used to doing this into adulthood.
