Have you heard of the GM diet? This diet is said to be able to lose weight up to 5-8 kilograms (kg) per week. A very fast weight loss method, right? This makes many people interested in trying it. However, is this diet definitely safe? Are there any dangers from the GM diet? Check out the following reviews to find out.
What is the GM diet?
The GM diet stands for the General Motors diet. As the name implies, this diet was originally developed for employees of the automotive company General Motors in the 1980s, whose aim was to lose weight. This diet has also been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (the food and drug control agency in the United States). Additionally, the GM diet has been tested at the Johns Hopkins health research center.
The GM diet is based on the principle that by eating only the food that is planned, the body will burn more calories than the calories that enter from food. This principle is explained by a nutritionist from the United States, Ashvini Mashru, R. D., in Women's Health.
This in turn can lead to faster weight loss. The GM diet is carried out for 7 days with different eating rules per day.
Guide to doing the GM diet
Following are the rules for sticking to the GM diet for seven days.
Day 1: Only eat fruits, except bananas. The reason is, bananas have higher levels of sugar and calories than other types of fruit. We recommend that you choose fruit with a lot of water, for example watermelon and apples. Fruits of this type can help flush out toxins from your body.
Day 2: Only eat vegetables, starting with baked or boiled potatoes (don't fry them). Vegetables provide many essential nutrients as well as fiber for the body. In addition, vegetables contain very few calories.
Day 3: Eat vegetables and fruits as you wish. However, you shouldn't eat bananas and potatoes.
Day 4: You can eat up to eight bananas and drink up to three glasses of milk. This is done to replace the potassium and sodium deficiency during the previous three days. You can also eat vegetable broth on this day.
Day 5: Time to eat lean meat with tomatoes (up to six tomatoes). You are also still allowed to eat vegetable soup.
Day 6: You can still eat lean meat, accompanied by a variety of vegetables.
Day 7: On this last day, you are allowed to eat brown rice with all kinds of vegetables. You can also drink fruit juices.
You are also advised to drink lots of water (up to 12-15 glasses) every day while on this diet. It aims to help flush out toxins from your body.
Be careful, the GM diet can be dangerous for health
Indeed, many say this diet helps you lose weight quickly. However, this diet certainly has its own risks.
Limiting the type of food every day makes many people complain of dizziness and actually want to eat more on the third or fourth day. Food restrictions can also cause you to lack many of the essential nutrients your body needs on a daily basis.
Lack of nutrients can lead to severe hair loss, dry skin, fatigue, muscle weakness and anemia. Only a few calories enter the body coupled with not being balanced by regular exercise, making the GM diet also can cause the body's metabolism to be slower.
The biggest problem with the GM diet is that the guidelines are only carried out for 7 days, not sustainable. So, even if you lose weight while on the GM diet, you will gain weight again when you return to your original eating habits. This is often because the weight lost during the GM diet is water weight, not fat.
So, the GM diet is not a safe way to lose weight. If you want to lose weight, it's best to do it in a healthy way. Change your eating habits to be healthier, so that this can be sustainable, not just changing your diet during the diet. In addition, also balance it with regular exercise.
