Why does your weight change every time you weigh it?
Body weight can change every day and even in a matter of hours. This change is caused by how much water you consume and lose from your body each day.
Kelly Hogan, MS, RD, SDN, clinical nutrition coordinator at Dubin Breast Center at Mount Sinai Hospital states that fluids that enter the body play an important role in weight change.
Two glasses of water plus the water content in food can add up to 0.45 kg of body weight. Eating, drinking, urinating, defecating, and exercising can all affect the composition of water in the body which will have an effect on changes in the number of the scale.
So remember, what you eat and drink plays a role in determining your weight. If you eat a lot of salty foods, your body will store a lot of fluids which will make you feel bloated so that your body seems to be heavier.
Likewise, carbohydrate intake can affect how much water the body has because the body needs extra fluids to store muscle sugar (glycogen) as energy. Each gram of glycogen requires three grams of water.
Therefore, the type of activity and how much water you consume per day can cause weight changes which are often temporary. So do not think that changes in body weight every day or every hour are a sign that you are losing body fat because it is absolutely impossible to lose 1-2 kg of fat overnight.
Weigh yourself every morning
Dr. Anita Petruzelli M.D., a doctor at BodyLogicMD states to find out your consistent weight, try to weigh it at the same time throughout the day. The morning is the best time to weigh yourself.
This is because the body has not been interfered with by the foods you consume. Meanwhile, day and night the body has accommodated a lot of food and fluids that can increase body weight which becomes a factor of body weight fluctuating when weighed.
Try to weigh your body weight after waking up naked and already urinating, whether it's defecating or urinating. Try to weigh yourself at the same time and on the same scale to see if you are at a stable weight.
Weight gain and loss every day or hour is normal. However, if the number shown increases and lasts for two days, the sign is that it is no longer excess fluid in the body, but body fat that has been formed.
Weight loss isn't the only way to judge how healthy you are. Don't let your efforts to lose or gain weight be done using extreme means that can harm the body.
