What is an inguinal hernia?

Parts of the muscular lining of the abdominal wall can become weak, causing the contents of the stomach to squeeze out. This causes a lump called a hernia to form.

Inguinal hernias occur in the inguinal canal, which is a narrow channel through which blood vessels pass through the abdominal wall.

Hernias can be dangerous because the intestines or other structures in the stomach can become trapped and blood flow stops (strangulated hernia).

You are prohibited from eating or drinking anything for 8 hours before the test.

You may be required to stop taking your medicines on or before the surgery. You should consult your doctor first before changing or stopping taking medicines.

How is the process of laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair?

The operation is usually performed under general anesthesia and lasts about 30 minutes (less than 1 hour for both sides).

The surgeon will make an incision in the abdomen. Equipment such as a telescope will be inserted into the stomach for surgery.

The surgeon will repair the part of the abdomen that is causing the hernia, and place a synthetic mesh over the area where it is weak.

What should I do after undergoing laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair?

You are allowed to go home the same day or the next day.

You can return to your activities once you feel better, usually in about 1 week. You don't need to avoid lifting weights but there may be discomfort when lifting heavy objects for 2 to 4 weeks.
