Bleeding from the vagina is not something foreign to women. Every month we experience it in the menstrual period. Vaginal bleeding is also common (though not always) the first time a woman loses her virginity. But what about when blood comes out of the vagina after sexual intercourse, even though you are no longer a virgin?
Some of the causes are often just minor things to worry about. But also it cannot be ignored, because there are several possible causes that must be watched out for.
What are the causes of vaginal bleeding after sexual intercourse?
1. Cervicitis
Cervicitis is inflammation of the cervix, located further down, the narrow end of the uterus and which connects to the vagina. Sometimes, there are no signs or symptoms shown when you have cervicitis. However, symptoms can include bleeding when you are not menstruating, and changes in the discharge from the vagina - such as vaginal discharge. Other symptoms include pain during sexual intercourse and bleeding from the vagina afterward. Usually cervicitis can also occur when you have sexually transmitted diseases, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea.
2. Cervical extropion
A condition in which the inner lining of the cervix protrudes into the vagina. However, it is not identified as a condition that can cause cancer.
3. Cervical polyps
This polyp is a benign tumor with a small and long shape that grows on the cervix. Symptoms can include vaginal bleeding after sexual intercourse, after menopause, and when you are not menstruating.
4. Vaginal dryness
This case can appear in women of all ages and ages. However, this is generally experienced by elderly women. Lack of the hormone estrogen is one of the triggers. Estrogen itself functions to help the health of the vaginal tissue, regulate the natural lubrication of the vagina, the acidity and elasticity of the vagina. With vaginal dryness, it is very likely that the friction during sexual intercourse can cause bleeding.
5. Vaginitis
It is also an inflammation that occurs in the vagina, resulting in pain, itching, and abnormal discharge. The cause is in the form of an imbalance between good and bad bacteria in the vagina. Decreased levels of estrogen and menopause can also be the cause.
Another cause of vaginal bleeding after sex
There are several other causes that can cause bleeding after sexual intercourse, such as:
- Friction generated during sexual intercourse
- Sexually transmitted infections, such as genital herpes and syphilis
- Lack of lubrication in the vagina or skip foreplay
- Cancer of the cervix (cervix), vagina, or uterus (womb)
When should I see a doctor?
You should see a doctor when bleeding persists. The doctor will perform an evaluation and a series of tests, such as:
- Women with irregular menstrual cycles may be asked to have a series of physical tests that emphasize the thyroid, breast, and pelvic area
- Pap smear to determine the risk of cervical cancer
- In premenopausal women, pregnancy tests need to be done
- Blood tests to find out your blood count, whether you have excessive blood deficiency
- Blood sampling test to evaluate thyroid, liver, and kidney function
- Blood test to find out the level of the hormone progesterone
- Pelvic ultrasound was performed based on the woman's medical history
