Generally, blisters filled with clear fluid develop on the surface of the skin as a sign of injury. The appearance of these nodules is actually the body's natural response to healing damaged tissue and at the same time preventing further injury. In some cases, the nodule can also contain blood. This bloody nodule generally develops in the mouth, called an oral blister. Not thrush, then what causes a rash in the mouth that contains blood?
Signs and symptoms of a bloody rash in the mouth
Just like a rash that appears on the surface of the skin, a rash in the mouth appears like a soft lump that you can touch with the tip of your tongue. Because they contain blood fluid, the blisters in the mouth tend to be dark in color like red or purple. Usually, this bloody rash appears on the inner cheeks, tongue, or the inside of the lips
This bloody nodule can cause pain, especially if rubbing against it while eating or brushing your teeth. A nodule in the mouth is different from canker sores. Canker sores are also characterized by reddish bumps in the mouth, but are usually surrounded by a yellowish-white coating around them.
In addition, oral infections also usually cause mouth sores. However, these sores in the mouth generally occur during a fever and are preceded by swollen lymph glands near the nasal passages. In contrast to the two, blood-filled nodules can occur immediately when the inside of the mouth is injured.
What causes a bloody rash in the mouth?
The appearance of blood-filled blisters is generally the result of trauma such as accidentally biting the inner cheek. Eating food that is still hot or sores from eating foods that have a sharp texture, such as chips, can also cause sores, so blisters can appear shortly after the wound has occurred.
Apart from trauma, there are a variety of other things that can cause blood-filled blisters to form on the walls of the mouth. For example:
- Allergic reactions - especially food allergies and blood allergies. The appearance of symptoms with this disorder is more likely when you cannot tolerate acidic foods, cooking spices with cinnamon, active substances on a toothbrush and mouthwash.
- Thrombocytopenia - several conditions related to thrombocytopenia such as pregnancy or taking certain antibiotics.
- Angina bullosa hemorrhagica - a rare type of disease that causes pain and blood blisters in the oral cavity. The appearance of the blisters is only brief and after that they burst suddenly.
- Chronic diseases and disorders - oral blisters may also be associated with more serious disorders such as oral herpes infections, excessive alcohol consumption, kidney failure, diabetes, and oral cancer.
Is the appearance of blood blisters in the mouth dangerous?
In most cases, a rash in the mouth is harmless and can go away on its own.
However, bloody nodules caused by angina bullosa hemorrhagica can be dangerous when they block the airways. Therefore, immediately do treatment if:
- The appearance of the blood blister is too large to interfere with eating and breathing
- Symptoms do not improve beyond two weeks
- Blisters are caused by the location of the dentures that are not quite right so that they often cause trauma due to friction
- The pain caused has disturbed activities
- Repeated blisters on the mouth
- The blister that was filled with blood has turned yellow or filled with pus, this is a sign of infection.
What can be done?
A nodule in the mouth can heal on its own without having to be treated. However, there are a few things to watch out for if you experience oral blisters:
- Avoid foods that can cause serious irritation to the surface of the oral cavity, such as foods that are too hot, too salty or spicy.
- Don't try to keep the blister filled with blood as this can create new sores and increase the risk for infection. Oral blisters can generally shrink and break on their own.
- If the blister causes pain or discomfort use pain medication or apply ice to the painful area.
