Eating petai and jengkol makes bad breath a risk for culinary lovers made of these grains. However, the delicious and savory flavors of jengkol and petai are still widely liked. Then, what causes jengkol and petai to make breath and urine smell bad?
Why does eating petai smell so bad?
Petai has a Latin language Parchia speciosa, found in many Southeast Asian countries, including in Indonesia. This candy-like grain does not give off its strong odor when it is raw. But, after you eat it, get ready for the bad smell to come out frequently with your breath and urine.
Then, what causes eating petai to make your breath and urine smell bad? In petai seeds, there are several kinds of substances that cause unpleasant odors such as hexathionine, tetrathiane, trithiolane, pentathiopane, pentathiocane, and tetrathiepane. In addition, petai contains a high concentration of amino acids and produces methane (fart-producing) gas in the body.
Luckily, substances containing sulfur compounds are not dangerous if ingested. But it will produce a gas odor that comes out of the breath in the mouth and makes the urine smell strong.
Why does eating jengkol smell bad?
Jengkol, or its Latin namearchidendron pauciflorum this, almost like a petai. This one food is commonly found in Southeast Asia and is famous for its delicious taste but makes human breath and urine smell.
In jengkol fruit there are sulfur-containing compounds called, djengkolic acid or jengkolat acid. This compound is composed of two cysteine amino acids bound by a methyl group on its sulfur atom. Well, this acid plays a role in the smell of urine that comes out, so it tends to smell bad.
Unfortunately, eating too much jengkol can cause it irritation (term disease, due to eating too much jengkol), which is a condition in which your urine will form crystals and hurt when expelled.
How to get rid of the smell after eating petai and jengkol
1. Drink and gargle with coffee
After eating petai and jengkol, usually the smell does not just catch the breath. About 10 to 15 minutes later, the smell will come out. You can get rid of the aroma by drinking coffee afterward.
The coffee used is black coffee with half a cup of water. Brew it, drink a few sips, and finally you can rinse your mouth with coffee water to get rid of the smell of the jengkol.
2. Drink milk
Milk is neutralizing food in the smell in the mouth. Basically, smelly food is still stored in the intestines, even though you've brushed your teeth a thousand times. Well, in milk, there are compounds that fight bacteria in eliminating bad breath after eating, namely allyl methyl sulfide or AMS. By drinking milk after eating petai and jengkol, surely the smell in your mouth will subside and disappear.
