We've all been there: anger, irritability, and frustration is unbearable, just because of hunger. The English term ishangry, combining two words "hungry" and "angry", which are often used as words to describe a phenomenon in which someone becomes irritable when hungry. Hangry that doesn't mean you are impatient or grumpy. Even someone who is very patient can turn aggressive when their stomach grumbles. What is the reason we get angry when we starve?
We get angry easily when we are hungry the brain is deficient in glucose
Reporting from The Huffington Post, Paul Currie, an appetite behavior expert and professor of psychology at Reed College, revealed that hunger can change a person to be very emotional, which often occurs as stress, anxiety, and anxiety.
That's why you probably know some people who go cheap when they're hungry or haven't eaten.
Apparently, this is because food is the main source of energy for the body. Every food that enters the body will be digested and converted into glucose which then flows into the bloodstream along with other nutrients to supply energy to every cell and tissue of the body. Glucose is the main food for the brain.
Angry when hungry, aka hangry, is actually the body's natural reaction to telling you that “Hey! It's time for you to eat! " The reason is, from the last time you eat, the amount of nutrients and glucose will slowly decrease. When the brain does not receive enough nutritious blood flow, the brain will perceive the situation as a life-threatening situation. Unlike other organs in the body that can still use other energy sources to keep functioning, the brain only relies heavily on glucose to keep it working.
The brain that lacks energy will then be slow to work. This makes it difficult for you to concentrate, often remains stunned, to the point of making a number of silly slips. Or, have you noticed that your words get messy or that you talk messy? This is an effect caused by the brain lack of food.
When there is a lack of nutrients, the brain is also "hungry" and so works more slowly to control emotions, such as anger. The reason is, the hunger signals sent by the brain also trigger the release of the stress hormone adrenaline cortisol, which makes it more difficult for you to control anger and emotions.
On the other hand, the brain also releases the hormone ghrelin which is produced in the stomach to trigger hunger. However, the receptors receiving the ghrelin signal are scattered throughout the body, including in the hypothalamus of the brain. Apart from stimulating hunger, ghrelin also produces an anxiety response that goes away once you eat.
How to solve hangry?
The easiest way to solve hangry aka the feeling of wanting to be angry because of hunger is to eat before you feel it too hungry. However, make sure to choose the right food sources.
Junk food such as candy or french fries can generally produce large amounts of glucose. This allows food to be processed quickly so you also feel hungry again quickly.
In the end, these foods will still make you feel even more angry when hunger comes back (hangry). So, choose nutrient-rich foods to satisfy your hunger and fill you longer, without accumulating calories.
Eating immediately may not be the ideal solution every time, because some things may prevent you from eating immediately when you are hungry, for example office hours, or because you are fasting (whether for religious reasons or as a way to adjust your diet to lose weight). In this case, just remember that your glucose response will react to restore your blood sugar level.
In addition, when you last a long time without food, your body will break down body fat reserves for energy, some of which will be processed into ketones, a byproduct of fat metabolism. Ketones are thought to help keep your hunger pangs under control, because your brain can use ketones instead of glucose for energy.
