Singing is a universal culture that is practiced by many people in all parts of the world. For some people, they are very confident in singing because they have good vocals. Meanwhile, for some other people, sometimes singing is only for self-enjoyment because they feel the voice is not good enough. Or even worse, some people don't even want to sing because they are afraid to hear their own voice because of the chaos. Why when singing there are people whose voices are good and bad? Here's the explanation.
What happens to your body when you sing?
According to Sean Hutchins, reported on the NBC news page, a researcher at the International Laboratory of Brain, Music, and Sound Research Université de Montréal, singing is a complex activity.
Singing is complicated because first one has to match the tone he hears with the sound that is going to be emitted exactly. Then someone who sings must also control their vocal muscles well so that the sound does not deviate from the tone it should be (called fals).
Then why are there people whose voices are not good when singing?
Sean Hutchins suspects there are two possibilities for someone to be less good at singing. First, because it can't pick up the tone properly. Second, because they cannot control the vocal cords and vocal muscles properly.
In the journal American Psychological Associations in 2012, Hutchins tested two groups in his research, namely a group of musicians (who had been trained in music) and a group of non-musicians (who had never been trained in music). First, respondents were asked to use a tool to assess their ability to pick up on tones. If they hear a tone, they have to match it by operating the instrument.
According to Hutchins, the result was that all respondents in both groups could hear the right tone. All respondents can match the tone heard correctly.
Next, both groups were asked to output their vocals, following the notes given on the computer. The result, when respondents were asked to use their own voice, in the non-musician group only 59% of them managed to produce the correct sound with the tone from the computer.
From these findings, Hutchins suspects that the root of the problem is that they do not have good control when moving the vocal muscles when making sounds. The brain also plays a role in making this vowel sound.
The brain is able to pick up the notes correctly, but someone who is bad at singing cannot make the same notes as what he hears. The brain is unable to connect the tone it hears with the appropriate muscle movements so that the sound matches what is heard.
Can the bad vocals be improved?
On the PennState News page, Professor Joanne Rutkowski from Pennsylvania State University said that the actual sound quality depends on many factors. Everyone can certainly learn to sing well enough to sing songs with a basic difficulty level, unless the person has a certain physical disability.
While everyone who can speak can learn to practice vocal voices, not everyone will have a voice that sounds amazingly beautiful. Musical talent and hours of flying in the music world also affect the quality of a person's voice.
According to Rutkowski, many people cannot sing because they have a habit of singing using the voice that they use everyday to speak. Average people speak in a limited and low range of voice.
Meanwhile, for singing, the voice issued is higher than the voice when speaking. Singing requires a relaxed vocal mechanism while processing the breath so that the resulting sound sounds very beautiful to the ear. So instead of using your voice when you speak as usual.
The longer people get used to singing in the voice they use every day for speaking, the more difficult it will be to change the habit. Therefore, younger people will be faster and easier to train their vocals.
Children are also more flexible at coordinating their muscles and brain with the tones they hear. For adults, it takes a lot of effort to improve their vocal sound. However, vocal exercises can be done by everyone so that their voice does not deviate from the tone it should be orfals.
