The Indonesian Socio-Economic Survey revealed that there was an increase in the average coffee consumption of up to 5.42 percent in Indonesia. This is supported by the results of Basic Health Research which shows that 31 percent of Indonesians who are more than 10 years old consume coffee more than once a day.
Caffeine is one of the substances contained in coffee. Caffeine is safe for consumption, but with a determined dose. Based on the Decree of the Head of the POM, the maximum caffeine consumption limit is 150 milligrams per day, divided into at least 3 doses. As for coffee, it can contain 50-200 milligrams of caffeine per cup, depending on the brew. Then, is there a relationship between caffeine consumption in coffee and weight loss?
The link between coffee, caffeine and weight loss
Caffeine may be able to help reduce a little and prevent weight gain, but in fact there is no research that really proves that consumption of caffeinated coffee can lose weight significantly and permanently.
Some studies have only only been carried out on animals, so it is doubtful to equate the results with humans. Even so, there are several theories that might support the "caffeinated coffee consumption can lose weight".
- Caffeine can increase your body's metabolism and help your body burn the calories you consume.
- Caffeine can increase alertness and ward off sleepiness in you, so you can be active for a longer period of time and expend more energy.
- Caffeine consumed in coffee can suppress your appetite. This is consistent with a study conducted in 2013 which revealed that, people who drank coffee on that day, ate less than those who did not drink coffee.
Of course, these theories will really be proven if you do not add a sweetener to your coffee, considering that the combination of coffee and caffeine may produce a slightly bitter brew. The addition of artificial sweeteners will certainly increase the calories you consume.
What happens if you consume excess caffeine?
Reactions to excess caffeine consumption in a person have varying effects. But in general, based on the level of severity, the POM has divided them into 3 levels;
- Caffeine poisoning at a mild level will cause symptoms of nausea and keep you awake
- At a moderate level, you will feel restless, vomiting to an increase in blood pressure
- Meanwhile, severe caffeine poisoning will cause you to vomit severe and prolonged until seizures.
Based on the duration of consumption, consuming caffeine at one time and in an amount that exceeds the recommended dose can cause feelings of anxiety, hallucinations, faster heart rate, and fever. Meanwhile, continuous caffeine consumption in adults can cause feelings of nervousness, anxiety, restlessness, and tremors (involuntary shaking of the limbs).
Apart from being found in coffee, caffeine is also contained in tea, chocolate, soft drinks and other energy drinks. It should also be noted that caffeine is an addictive ingredient and is not recommended for consumption by people with heart disease, diabetes, pregnant women and hypertension.
So, how much coffee have you had today?
