Surgical surgery is a method of treatment that is most often used to treat a medical condition or disease. But of course not all diseases or body function disorders can be cured by surgery. Each type of surgical procedure has different purposes, procedures and objectives. Here's what you need to know about the various types of surgical operations, as a provision for information in case one day your doctor recommends that you undergo surgery.
Different types of surgical operations have different goals and objectives
Surgical procedures are basically divided into three major groups, in which there will still be further divided according to the category. Here are the details.
1. Group of operations based on objectives
This first group classified surgical procedures according to the purpose for which they were performed. Basically surgery is considered a method of treatment, but this medical procedure can also be used to:
- Diagnose. Surgery is used to diagnose certain diseases, such as biopsy operations, which are often performed to confirm suspicion of solid cancer or tumors in certain parts of the body.
- Prevent. Not only to treat, surgery is also done to prevent a condition that is even worse. For example, surgery to remove colon polyps which, if left untreated, can grow into cancer.
- Eliminate. This operation is performed with the aim of removing a number of tissues in the body. Usually, this type of surgery has the ending –ectomy. For example, mastectomy (removal of the breast) or hysterectomy (removal of the uterus).
- Restore. Surgery is also performed to be able to return a body function to normal again. For example, in breast reconstruction performed by someone who has had a mastectomy.
- Palliative. This type of surgery is intended to reduce the pain felt by patients who usually have end-stage chronic disease.
2. Group of operations based on the level of risk
Every surgical operation has risks, but the level of risk is different. The following is a grouping of operations based on the level of risk:
- Major surgery, is an operation performed on parts of the body such as the head, chest and stomach. One example of this surgery is organ transplant surgery, brain tumor surgery, or heart surgery. Patients who undergo this surgery usually take a long time to recover.
- Minor surgery, as opposed to major surgery, it does not make patients wait long to recover. Even in some types of surgery, the patient is allowed to go home on the same day. Examples of such operations are a biopsy of breast tissue.
3. Group operations based on technique
Surgery itself can be performed using a variety of different techniques, depending on which part of the body needs to be operated on and what disease the patient has. So what are the existing operating techniques?
- Open surgical operation. This method is usually called conventional surgery, which is a medical procedure that makes an incision in the body using a special knife. An example is heart surgery, the doctor cuts a part of the patient's chest and opens it so that the heart organs are clearly visible.
- Laparoscopy. If previously the operation was performed by incising parts of the body, in laparoscopy, the surgeon would only cut a little and let a tool such as a tube go into the hole that has been made, to find out what problems occur in the body.
