What is fusidic acid for?

Fusidic acid or fusidic acidis a medicine to treat skin infections due to bacteria staphylococcus. The mechanism of action of this drug is to stop the growth of infection-causing bacteria. Sodium fusidate is a fusidic acid derivative usually found in ointments.

Fusidic acid cream and sodium fusidate ointment are antibiotic drugs that usually get rid of skin infections quickly, especially those that cover only a small area.

If the infection spreads, antibiotic tablets or liquid medicine may be needed. If the infected skin area is inflamed, your doctor may prescribe a cream that combines fusidic acid with an NSAID drug, for example hydrocortisone or betamethasone.

How do you use fusidic acid?

What is the dosage for fusidic acid for adults?

Oral tablet fusidic acid: 500 mg tid. May increase to 1 g tid in severe infections.

Intravenous fusidic acid: for patients over 50 kg: 500 mg tid, may increase to 1 g tid in severe infections. For patients under 50 kg: 6-7 mg / kg tid. For a slow IV infusion of at least 2 hours, it must be given via a large vein with good blood flow.

Fusidic acid eye drops:1% eye drop, drop once into the affected eye every 12 hours for 7 days.

Fusidic acid ointments and creams:2% ointment / cream / gel, apply it on the affected area 3-4 times a day until it starts to get better. If the gauze is wrapped, the frequency of use may be reduced to 1-2 times per day.

What is the dosage for fusidic acid for children?

Oral: children under 1 year of age: about 15 mg / kg; children 1-5 years: 250 mg; children 5-12 years: 500 mg. Regulated in tid.

Intravenous:20 mg / kg per day in 3 separate doses. Given slowly by IV infusion for at least 2 hours; should be given via a large vein with good blood flow.

What side effects can be experienced due to fusidic acid?

The following are the side effects of fusidic acid eye drops:

• the eye feels stinging or hot for a while after use

• mouth ulcers, sore throat, or other infections that are repeated and difficult to go away
