There are many people in this world who are confused about their sexual orientation. The reason is that sexual orientation is a spectrum pool, not two polar opposites. Therefore, this world consists not only of heterosexual people (who like the opposite sex), but also accompanied by gays and lesbians (liking the same sex) and bisexuals - amidst a variety of other sexual orientations. Do you really know what bisexual is? Find out exactly what bisexuality is and its causes below.
Understand what bisexual is
What is bisexual? Bisexuals are people who have the same strong attraction to men and women, be it emotionally, romantically, intellectually, and / or sexually. This attraction can happen to two people at the same time or one person at different times.
Well, simply put, if you are a heterosexual man, you will certainly get inner and sexual satisfaction with a female partner. Meanwhile, a bisexual man will get inner and sexual satisfaction with both men and women.
According to the fifth edition of the Guidelines for the Classification and Diagnosis of Mental Disorders (PPGDJ), bisexuality is not a mental disorder. A psychic condition can be said to be a mental disorder if it constantly disturbs a person's mood, thinking ability, and behavior until he is unable to carry out his daily activities.
Meanwhile, bisexual people have normal moods, thinking abilities, and behaviors like heterosexuals. There is no difference in termsmood, work or study competences, and emotions. Bisexual people are also not disturbed at all in carrying out their daily activities. Like heterosexual people are not bothered to go about their daily activities because your sexual orientation is with the opposite sex, for example.
Bisexuality can be caused by a genetic code in a person's body
Determining why someone is bisexual is very complicated. Just like when you are asked by other people, why do you become a fan of the opposite sex? What caused it? When did you realize you were heterosexual? Of course it's hard to answer, right?
Well, did you know that a person being bisexual can also be caused by a special genetic code that distinguishes bisexual from heterosexual. Although it is not yet certain that this gene determines a person's sexual orientation, a study concluded that this genetic code still has an important role in determining a person's sexual orientation.
This study shows that a gene on the X chromosome or one of the sex chromosomes called Xq28 can distinguish homosexuals from heterosexuals, and this gene was found to be higher in gay men.
This gene, as reported by Medical Daily, causes bisexuals to express these genes by choosing same sex partners (women with women or men with men) and also being able to choose partners of the opposite sex. Since the discovery of this gene, scientists have come a few steps closer to understanding what bisexuality is in a scientific context.
Bisexuality is not just confusion and inability to choose
Bisexual people who have sexual attraction to the opposite sex and same sex are often considered as people who are confused about their sexual orientation. The results of a recent study by a team from Northwestern University reveal otherwise.
According to the results of the study, bisexual people do have sexual stimulation of the same or the opposite sex. Researchers looked at approximately 100 men from Chicago who identified themselves as heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual. The study participants were then fitted with sensors on their genitals to measure erection rates while they watched male or female intimacy videos.
In contrast to other bisexual studies, this study uses clearer criteria to identify bisexuality. Bisexual men in this study were those who had sexual relations with at least two people of each sex and had romantic relationships for three months or more with partners of both sexes.
Researchers found that men who were bisexual admitted to feeling aroused by pornographic videos involving male and female actors. Meanwhile, homosexual and heterosexual men did not feel the same response. This finding is also confirmed by the results of the genital sensor.
It can be concluded that no one can sue a bisexual person to "choose" which one he likes more, male or female. Likewise, a heterosexual person cannot be forced to be a homosexual or bisexual.
If you are aroused by seeing a man as well as a woman it does not mean that you are bisexual
Even so, Dr. Lisa Diamond, a psychologist who was not involved in this study, argues that measuring stimulation from the appearance of an erection alone cannot reveal significantly about a person's sexual orientation. The parameters in this study may be more appropriate for knowing the real experiences of bisexual people.
Experts commenting on the study said it was too narrow a bisexual measure to be based on received sexual stimulation. According to Ellyn Ruthstrom, chairman of the Bisexual Resource Center in Boston, said that a person can express sexual tendencies in many ways. It's not that if you are turned on to see a man as well as a woman that you are bisexual.
The problem is, to determine what bisexuality is and whether you are one of them, you have to feel emotional and inner attraction with both sexes. It's not just sexual attraction. You can become aware of your sexual orientation at various moments in your life. Some people become aware of their sexual orientation from an early age, while others only begin to understand their differences in sexual orientation in adulthood. It is important to note that there is not one thing or event that is experienced in life that can “make” a person gay, lesbian, or bisexual.
