It is not impossible to overcome drowsiness without consuming coffee. There are several ways you can do so you don't get addicted to drinking coffee when drowsiness comes, here are some ways you can do it:
1. Breakfast
Drowsiness comes not only at night, but also in the morning. Drowsiness is also caused by tiredness, not just insufficient sleep. When we skip breakfast in the morning, hunger will come more quickly, as a result we have no energy and are more easily sleepy. According to British researchers at Cardiff University suggest that someone who consumes cereal will more easily avoid stress. Breakfast proves that physical and mental performance can go better during the day than not doing breakfast. However, it should be noted in choosing breakfast, avoid heavy foods that contain lots of carbohydrates. You can try fruit, cereals, bread, if you are not used to it you can reduce the portion of rice that will be eaten for breakfast time.
2. Snack
Take time to snack on food every three to four hours, to avoid excessive hunger. When we feel excessively hungry, we end up consuming large amounts of carbohydrates, this can lead to drowsiness after eating. According to Roberta Anding, R.D., a speaker from the American Dietetic Association (ADA), snacking can function to stabilize blood sugar. You can try whole grain crackers, granola, fruit, or low-fat yogurt as a snack. If drowsiness comes at night, try to snack on fruit that is easy to digest, so that the body's metabolism is maintained.
3. Drink water
White water is bound by blood, then functions to provide oxygen to the brain. Drinking enough water can keep your body from feeling drowsy. When we are dehydrated, our heart pumps harder, which causes fatigue more quickly. To find out if we are dehydrated or not, pay attention to the urine that is excreted. If we drink enough water, the urine will be clear or yellowish.
4. Moderate exercise
Moderate exercise can make your adrenaline rush, so you will be alert again. You just need to stretch the muscles, stretching light or skipping slowly. You can also take a short walk outside to get some fresh air.
5. Wash your face
Washing your face or taking a shower can relieve drowsiness. The body will come back refreshed. Based on the findings on Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, water therapy can neutralize moods and generate energy when feeling overwhelmed.
6. Set the hours of sleep
Set the hours of sleep every day, try to get enough sleep every day, about 6 hours per day. Stop playing your cell phone or watching TV twenty minutes before you go to bed. Getting enough sleep will reduce fatigue. Sufficient hours of sleep also reduce stress and anxiety. What causes fatigue is not only drowsiness, but also mental stress, our energy is drained by what we think.
7. Listening to music
Listening to music can be another alternative to avoid drinking coffee. Choose music that makes you feel energized. Besides being uplifting, music can also calm the mind. Based on the journal Ergonomics, there are studies that mention that people run on treadmill by listening to music can run faster than those who do not.
