When the baby is born, the first cry will mark its freedom. During the first week, there are changes that the baby goes through to adapt to life. At the same time, early childhood's resistance is so weak that it will be susceptible to several diseases.

Some of the common conditions that are often found in newborns:

1. jaundice (yellow)

During the postpartum period, newborns release bile pigments that cause yellowing of the skin. Jaundice (jaundice) occurs on days 4-5 after birth and ends on days 9-10. For premature babies, jaundice will last longer. Physiological jaundice in neonates is still normal and does not cause disturbances in child development.

2. Weight loss

This occurs 3-4 days after birth and the cause is a change in environment. After 2 weeks of intensive care and breastfeeding, the baby will gain its original weight and will begin to gain weight over time.

3. Sneezing and nasal congestion

This is caused by irritants, such as when the child inhales cigarette smoke, dust (avoid placing the fan in the child's room as the fan easily spreads dust from one place to another), and dry air.

To prevent sneezing and nasal congestion in children, avoid irritants (animal dander, cigarette smoke, dust), use a humidifier indoors, use a nasal spray or nasal irritant medication. Nasal drops are a 0.9% sodium chloride solution and a nasal suction device for children using a rubber ball sterilized in boiling water.

4. Hiccups

In infants and adults, there are many ways to deal with hiccups. However, mothers should not apply extreme measures to newborns like adults do. The hiccups in babies will disappear naturally without worrying too much. If the baby's hiccups last a long time, about 5-10 minutes, the mother can pump the milk to the spoon, and feeding a few tablespoons of breast milk or plain water can reduce the likelihood that the baby will suckle too quickly.

5. Respiratory infection

It is caused by a virus or bacteria and is very common in babies. This illness lasts for a week or two with a runny nose, fever, and not breastfeeding for several days, which can last about 2-3 weeks. More serious symptoms require a doctor's care. Therefore, it is important for children to see a doctor immediately.

Newborns breathe through the lungs and their abdominal breathing style differs from that of adults, with occasional mild apnea due to an unresponsive respiratory center. The average increase in heart rate is 130 beats per minute. Red blood cells in babies increase and then decrease. In addition, the lifespan of these blood cells is shorter to adjust to the state of independent life from the previous stage in the mother's womb.

Because young bodies are prone to hypothermia, it is important to keep the baby warm. A baby's digestive system can start digesting immediately after birth, and it is important to breastfeed the baby right after birth.
