Different types of tea
The process for making a cup of tea is not as easy as it seems. Tea is a drink prepared from leaves Camellia sinensis which is dried. Then the dried tea leaves will go through different oxidation processes. This is what distinguishes one type of tea from another. In general, tea is divided into the following four types.
Black tea
The most common type of tea in Indonesia is black tea. Black tea leaves have undergone the highest fermentation and oxidation processes compared to other types of tea. Its properties include protecting the lungs from harmful toxins and preventing strokes.
Green tea
The tea leaves will be steamed and dried so that the oxidation process is not as big as black tea. Green tea is rich in antioxidants that can keep blood vessels and brain healthy. In addition, research has also proven that this tea is able to prevent various types of cancer.
Oolong tea
This tea is similar to black tea, but the fermentation and oxidation process of the leaves is lower. The taste and aroma is halfway between black tea and green tea. Oolong tea is known to help lower cholesterol levels.
White tea
Unlike other types of tea, white tea does not undergo any oxidation or fermentation processes at all. The taste and aroma will be lighter. In Indonesia, this tea is still rarely produced. In fact, the benefits of white tea as an anticancer are believed to be the most potent compared to other types of tea.
The effect of drinking too much tea
Drinking tea should be no more than five cups a day. If you consume too much tea every day and this has been going on for years, you are at risk of experiencing several health problems. Be aware of the following side effects.
1. Difficulty sleeping
Like coffee, tea also contains high caffeine. One cup of black and green tea contains about 40 milligrams of caffeine. Although there is less caffeine in a cup of coffee, if you consume too much you are at risk for various sleep disorders. Maybe your body is already feeling tired but your eyes are having a hard time closing or you might wake up suddenly in the middle of the night. If you are sensitive to caffeine, drinking tea before bed will exacerbate sleep disturbances at night.
2. Restless
Caffeine will indeed have a different impact on each person. So, drinking too much tea can cause some people to feel restless, anxious, and uneasy because of the caffeine content in tea. Some people also feel dizzy, have headaches, and have a pounding chest that makes the body very uncomfortable.
3. Addiction
Accustomed to consuming caffeinated drinks has the risk of causing dependence. These stimulants do have addictive properties so it will be difficult for you to quit or reduce the amount of tea consumption in one day. 4. Anemia
For people who have problems with iron absorption and bleeding disorders, drinking too much tea can trigger anemia. This is caused by the tannin content in tea which can interfere with the process of absorption of iron by the body. According to a report from Colorado State University, drinking tea can reduce iron absorption by up to 60%.
5. Osteoporosis
Most of drinking tea was found to increase the risk of osteoporosis due to reduced bone density. Healthy bones need lots of calcium to stay strong. Meanwhile, drinking green tea more than three cups a day can increase the level of calcium wasted from the body through urine. In fact, tea itself is a diuretic or triggers the kidneys to produce and excrete urine.
