In the body there are two important hormones, estrogen and testosterone, which function to increase immunity, energy, libido, and most importantly human reproduction. These two hormones need a balance in the amount of each other in order to get proper body function and work. But what if one hormone is too much? And, what if it's the hormone testosterone? Check out the following discussion.
What is the testosterone hormone?
Testosterone is often considered the "male hormone," which is produced in the male testes. Even so, women also have the hormone testosterone in the body, its function is to increase sex drive and as a mood regulator. While the function of the hormone testosterone is to build muscle mass and increase male energy.
What happens if you have excess testosterone?
The effect of excess testosterone on the body depends on age and gender. In both men and women, excess testosterone can cause puberty before adulthood and result in infertility. Not only that, below are the effects of excess testosterone that can arise:
1. Oily and spotty skin
In fact, excess testosterone can cause skin to become oily and break out. This is caused by high levels of DHT (dihydrotestosterone) which are increased, associated with excess testosterone itself. High testosterone levels will increase the production of sebum oil, a thick substance that can clog pores on the face. Now, if the pores are closed, bacteria will accumulate on the skin and cause inflammation, or what is commonly called acne.
2. Hair loss
One of the things that can happen if there is an excess of the hormone testosterone in men and women is a symptom of hair loss or even baldness. Generally, the symptoms of this hair loss will start from the knot of the scalp, then will continue to lose the hair on the temples and will continue throughout.
3. The testicles shrink
In simple terms, when the brain stimulates excess testosterone in the body, the brain will assume that it all started from the place where testosterone is produced, namely the testicles. Furthermore, the brain will shut down the production of LH (Luteinizing Hormone), which is useful in telling the testes to produce testosterone. Therefore, the testicles will experience a change in size by shrinking themselves.
4. Excess red blood cells and hemoglobin
If your body experiences excess testosterone in the body, one of the effects is an increase in red blood cell levels and hemoglobin levels in the body. In older men, an increase in red blood cells can lead to heart attacks and strokes.
The increase in red blood cells in the blood, due to excess testosterone, can be reduced by lowering the replacement dose of testosterone, or by donating blood. Usually aims to lower the level of blood cells in the body.
