What Drug Sodium Thiosulfate?
What is sodium thiosulfate for?
Sodium thiosulfate is a drug that can be used to reduce some of the side effects of cisplatin (a cancer drug). It is also used with other drugs in the emergency treatment of cyanide poisoning.
Sodium thiosulfate should be given only by or under the direct supervision of your doctor.
How is sodium thiosulfate used?
IV: use of more than 10-20 minutes.
extravasation management: immediately stop infusion causing swelling and disconnect the IV line; slowly extravasive the solution from the IV line; remove the needle / cannula (while remaining in place for extravasation of cisplatin to allow use of sodium thiosulfate through the needle / cannual); raise the extremities.
Mechlorethamine: inject subcutaneously into the area of extravation using a <25-gauge needle; Needle changes with each injection.
Cisplatin, concentrated: inject into an existing IV line; also consider injecting 1 mL as a 0.1 mL subcutaneous injection (clockwise) into the area around the extravasation using a new 25-gauge or 27-gauge needle for each injection.

What is the sodium thiosulfate dosage for adults?
For use with cisplatin (cancer drug):
Adults and teenagers: the first dose, given before cancer treatment, usually 4 grams per square meter of body surface area, is injected into a vein. The second dose is started at the same time as the cancer drug. The use of this drug is usually 12 grams per square meter of body surface area, injected into a vein for six hours.
For cyanide poisoning:
Adults and teenagers: the usual dose is 12.5 grams injected into a vein at a rate of 0.625-1.25 grams (2.5-5 milliliters) per minute.
What is the sodium thiosulfate dosage for children?
The usual dose is 412.5 milligrams (mg) per kilogram (kg) (187 mg per pound) of body weight or 7 grams per square meter of body surface area injected into a vein at a rate of 0.625-1.25 grams (2.55 grams). mL) per minute.
