What is varicose veins surgery?
Varicose veins are enlarged and twisted veins in your legs. This condition is generally genetic and can get worse during pregnancy and if your activities / work require you to stand for long periods of time.
The blood vessels in your legs contain one-way valves to help blood flow back to your heart. If the valve doesn't work properly, blood will flow in the wrong path, causing varicose veins.
When do I need to have varicose veins surgery?
Surgery can help prevent symptoms and complications caused by varicose veins.
Precautions & warnings
What should be known before undergoing varicose veins surgery?
Special socks can help to control symptoms but will not cure varicose veins. Other therapies can be used, such as through injection (foam sclerotherapy), radio-frequency ablation (RFA) or endovenous laser ablation (EVLA). Varicose veins can come back.
Process
How is the process of varicose veins surgery?
This procedure is performed under general anesthesia. The procedure will take approximately 20 minutes - 3 hours. Your doctor will cut a thin vein from the large vein in your leg through an incision in the groin of your thigh or behind your knee. In addition, your doctor may make multiple incisions along the varicose veins to remove them. The main varicose veins will generally be removed using a special instrument.
What should I do after having varicose vein surgery?
After the procedure, you will:
- back home the same day, or the next day
- get back to work in a few days, depending on the type of work you're doing
- if your surgical wound has healed, you can return to your normal activities once you feel comfortable
- regular exercise will help you to recover quickly. Before starting, ask your doctor and medical personnel for advice
Complications
What complications can occur?
Varicose veins surgery is a safe procedure. However, there are some risks of minor complications that may occur. Consult with your surgeon about the risks that you might get.
Complications from a number of common medical procedures include unexpected reactions to anesthesia, bleeding or blood clots (deep vein thrombosis DVT).
Other, more specific complications, include:
- a lump develops under the wound
- numbness or tingling sensation
- nerve damage
- recurrent varicose veins
- embossed thread veins
- swelling of the legs
- injury to the arteries, veins or nerves of the legs
You can reduce the risk of complications by being careful and always following your doctor's rules about preparing to receive an endoscopy, such as fasting and stopping certain medications.
