After going through dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) treatment, the body is still weak. This is normal because the body is still in the process of recovering. While in this recovery process, the body needs time to get back to normal.

Many patients may ask why after the treatment is finished, but the body does not immediately get into shape. There is a medical explanation behind the DHF recovery process.

The reason the body feels weak after passing DHF treatment

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is a viral infection caused by a virus from the family Flaviviridae. After DHF treatment is complete, sometimes our bodies still feel weak in carrying out daily activities. This can happen because some people experience post dengue fatigue syndrome (PDFS).

In a study in Sri Lanka, out of 52 patients suffering from DHF, 9 patients (17.3%) had PDFS. Fatigue defined as symptoms that can occur in muscles and nerves. Usually patients experience muscle weakness with or without pain. The mechanism of PDFS occurrence is a combination of the pathogenic effect of the virus and the patient's immune response.

Recovery time varies from one person to another, of course depending on the immune system of each person, some do not go through a weak phase after DHF and some take several weeks to months to recover. Therefore, the food and drink we consume is very important for the recovery process.

What needs to be considered during the DHF recovery period?

During the DHF recovery period, you cannot immediately do activities as usual because your condition is still weak. The body still needs time to rest and activities need to be managed step by step. Your body needs to adapt until it finally recovers, so you are ready to start your daily routine.

Before that, know what to avoid when the body is weak after DHF treatment.

  • Staying up late so sleep deprivation or sleep schedule is interrupted
  • Lack of drinking, which increases the risk of dehydration
  • Physical activity or exercise is too strenuous
  • Eat non-nutritious foods such as junk food, fast food, spicy fatty foods, greasy
  • Stress

Avoid the five things above to push your body stronger through the recovery period. Furthermore, there are a number of things the patient can do during the recovery period.

1. Get enough sleep

Patients need adequate sleep, especially when the body feels weak after DHF treatment is complete. Get at least 6-8 hours of sleep per day, so the body can boost the immune system to fight other infections when the immune system is not optimal.

2. Nutritional balanced food

Choose to eat foods with balanced nutrition in order to boost the immune system. For example, consumption of foods containing vitamin C which can boost the immune system. This is because our bodies cannot produce on their own, so there needs to be intake from food and drinks.

3. Physical activity slowly

Of course, it is permissible to do light activity and exercise during the recovery period, even though the body is a bit weak after DHF treatment. But remember, avoid strenuous activities. Exercise can be started lightly and slowly, such as a morning walk, jogging with a ratio of 1: 3 with a break. For example, exercise for 10 minutes, then the rest should be 30 minutes.

Powerful food when the body is weak after DHF

Apart from the important points that have been previously mentioned, there is also the intake of food that can be consumed to support the recovery of DHF patients who are still weak after DHF treatment. The following foods can be consumed.

1. Guava

Guava contains vitamin C which is an essential vitamin for tissue growth and repair in the human body. The human body cannot produce vitamin C, so it needs to be helped by the food and drinks we consume.

2. Garlic

Garlic has been used in herbal medicine for centuries because of its antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal effects. Garlic can also stimulate the immune system. In studies, patients who consumed garlic recovered faster.

3. Honey

Apart from guava and white bottom, honey can also be consumed to treat weakness after dengue fever. Honey has potent antibacterial effects. Some studies also say that honey can boost the immune system, so honey is very good for consumption when sick or during recovery.

4. Avocado

Avocados are high in fat and low in carbohydrates. Avocados are also a great source of fiber, vitamins and minerals. Avocado is also soft and easy to consume, especially when sick or recovering from dengue fever. Avocados can also reduce inflammation and boost the immune system.
