First aid to deal with nosebleeds quickly

Bleeding from your nose or called a sudden nosebleed often makes you panic. You need to know how to deal with nosebleeds properly. When a nosebleed occurs, most people lie down immediately or tilt their heads back. However, actually that method is not right. Then, how about first aid for correct nosebleeds.

Here's how to deal with nosebleeds quickly

1. Sit up straight and lean forward

Keep yourself straight and point your body slightly forward. By staying upright, you can reduce the blood pressure in your nasal veins. This can also prevent more blood from flowing out.

Additionally, by leaning forward, you can prevent blood from getting back into your nose or airway, or from being swallowed, which can irritate your stomach.

If you lie down, the blood will get back in and can block your airway.

2. Pinch the nostrils

Use your thumb and index finger to pinch your nostrils, for 10-15 minutes. While doing this, you can try to breathe through your mouth.

Pinching the nostrils is useful for applying pressure to the bleeding point in the nasal septum so that the blood stops flowing.

3. Don't breath through your nose just yet

To prevent rebleeding, do not breathe through your nose and do not bend over for several hours after the nosebleed. You can also gently apply some petroleum jelly to the inside of your nose using a cotton ball or your fingers.

4. Use a cold compress

To deal with nosebleeds, you can use a cold compress on the nose. However, don't stick the ice cubes directly to your nose. Wrap an ice cube in a soft cloth or clean towel, and apply it to your nose to stop nosebleeds.

5. Immediately see a doctor, if the nosebleed has not stopped

If bleeding returns, blow vigorously to clear your nose of the blood clot. Then spray both sides of your nose with a decongestant nasal spray containing oxymetazoline (Afrin).

In addition, try again pinching your nostrils. However, if the nosebleed doesn't stop, seek medical help immediately.
