What is iopromide used for?
Iopromide is a type of injection drug. This drug belongs to the type of drug radiographic contrast agent which is used for the following:
- Cerebral arteriography and peripheral arteriography
- Coronary arteriography and left ventriculography, visceral arteriography and aortography
- Peripheral venography
- Excretory urography
This medication is generally used to help diagnose or find problems with the brain, heart, head, blood vessels, and other parts of the body. This drug is an iodinated contrast agent. Contrast agents are used to create clear images of different parts of the body during medical procedures such as CT scans and angiography.
Iopromide is only used or under the direct supervision of a doctor. Therefore, this drug is included in prescription drugs because you cannot buy it freely in pharmacies.
How is iopromide used?
If you want to use this drug, you must know how to use it, as follows:
- This medication cannot be used alone at home, therefore it will be administered by a doctor or other health professional. This medicine will be given to you or your child in the hospital. Iopromide is given by injection.

What side effects can I experience due to iopromide?
Use of this drug can also increase the risk of side effects. Immediately consult a doctor or nurse if the following side effects occur.
- bleeding, blistered skin, burning, cold, discoloration of skin, feeling pressure, hives, infection, inflammation, lump, numbness, pain, rash, redness, scarring, pain, stinging, swelling, tingling, rotting, or warm over the injection site
- chest pain
- feel faint, lightheadedness
- feeling hot
- redness of the skin, especially of the face and neck
- frequent urination
- headache
- sweating
Very rare side effects occur:
- bloating or swelling of the face, arms, hands, lower legs
- bluish lips or skin
- chest tightness
- seizures
- cough
- decreased frequency of urination
- difficult or painful urination or pain when urinating
- difficulty breathing
- excessive thirst
- fever or chills
- nausea or vomiting
- wheezing or wheezing breath
- pain or discomfort in the arms, jaw, back, or neck
- pale skin at the injection site
- irregular heartbeat
- tingling in the hands or feet
- unusual fatigue
- weight gain or loss

What medicines may interact with iopromide?

- Metformin
Using Iopromide with the drugs below may increase the risk of side effects, but in some cases, a combination of these two drugs may be the best treatment. If both drugs are prescribed for you, your doctor will usually change the dosage or determine how often you should take them.
- Iocetamic Acid
- Iopanoic Acid
- Ipodate
- Tyropanoate Sodium
Can food or alcohol interact with iopromide?
Certain drugs should not be used with meals or when eating certain foods because drug interactions can occur. Consuming alcohol or tobacco with certain drugs can also cause interactions to occur. Discuss your use of drugs with food, alcohol, or tobacco with your health care provider.
What health conditions can interact with iopromide?

- allergic rhinitis (hay fever)

- asthma. Use with care. May increase the risk of an allergic reaction
- blood clotting problems (eg phlebitis, thrombosis)

- hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
- pheochromocytoma (adrenal problem)
- sickle cell anemia (inherited blood disorder). Use with care. It might make things worse.
- vascular disease
- congestive heart failure
- dehydration
- diabetes
- Kidney illness
- multiple myeloma (plasma cell cancer)
- paraproteinemia (high amounts of paraproteins in the blood). May increase the risk of developing kidney failure.
- dehydration (caused by prolonged fasting or use of laxatives). Should not be given to pediatric patients with this condition.
- homocystinuria (genetic disease). Patients with this condition should not undergo angiography because of the increased risk of developing blood clotting problems.
- kidney disorders. Use with care. Side effects will increase due to sluggish removal of drug remnants from the body.
Iopromide overdose
What should I do in an emergency or overdose?
In case of an emergency or overdose, contact the local emergency services provider (112) or immediately to the nearest hospital emergency department.
What should I do if I miss a dose?
If you forget a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, when it is nearing the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the usual dosing schedule. Don't double the dose.
