There are various causes of amputation, this depends on the part of the body that is amputated. Severe injury or disease can sometimes damage parts of the body that are unable to regenerate or heal. When body tissue dies, the infection will enter and spread to other parts of the body. The main cause of tissue death that leads to infection is a lack of blood flow. Blood carries essential nutrients and oxygen to the individual cells that make up your body's tissues. When disease or injury damages the blood vessels beyond repair, the tissue supplied by the blood vessels dies, and a dangerous infection can get inside. When there is no hope that the damaged or infected tissue can be returned to a healthy state, amputations are performed to protect the rest of the body from spreading the infection.

Various causes of amputation

1. Peripheral vascular disease

It is an amputation-causing disease that affects the peripheral vascular system, and most of the arteries. Diabetes and the combination of high blood pressure and high cholesterol cause damage to the lining of the arteries. The large artery becomes narrower or becomes completely blocked. This reduces blood pressure and circulating blood to an extreme. The walls of the arteries will shrink and the capillaries will thicken, so that oxygen cannot cross the walls easily. If blood flow is reduced, gangrene can occur. Gangrene is dead tissue black and some are dry and wet. Wet gangrene is gangrene that is infected and requires immediate emergency care.

2. Trauma

Amputation of a limb can occur at the site of an accident, such as experiencing a severe open fracture or severe neurovascular injury. Examples of traumatic injuries include, fractures, broken blood vessels, burns, blast wounds, and stab or gunshot wounds. In the case of traumatic amputation injuries, either as a life-saving procedure or when a limb is injured so badly that recovery is more effective with amputation. Limb amputation trauma cases can occur for months or years due to failure of the healing process.

3. Diabetic foot ulcers

Diabetes is known to cause several problems, including heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, blindness, and nerve dysfunction. This nerve dysfunction can sometimes be very painful, but often it can be numb. Numbness is very dangerous, because pain is necessary to protect the body from injury. When your foot is numb, you can cause damage by walking on the inflamed area, developing calluses without realizing it, or stepping on an object that could cause immediate injury. The injured area becomes inflamed and can turn into a deep blister, such as an impacted muscle, bone, or tendon, which in turn can interfere with wound healing. The deeper the ulcer is, the harder it is to heal.

4. Diabetic foot infection

A person with diabetes tends to develop infections because diabetes suppresses the immune system. When there is an open wound, bacteria can enter the tissue under the skin, so the infection can spread quickly. Infections of the feet can be classified as life-threatening or non-life-threatening. Life-threatening limb infections require hospitalization, IV antibiotics, and surgery. Infections that are not life-threatening can usually be treated with oral antibiotics. Many infections can spread to the bones, which can lead to osteomyelitis. Osteomyelitis is not easy to diagnose. In most cases, the infected body part must be amputated. Nearly 1 in 5 infections requires amputation.

5. Tumors

Bone and cartilage tumors that form osteosarcoma and chondrosarcoma are rare malignant neoplasms that can cause amputation. These tumors are aggressive and need local and systemic treatment. The surgery for removal of these tumors is mostly done with the rescue of the limbs.

6. Cancer

Cancer can cause severe damage to body tissues. Cancer also requires amputation for a different reason, which is to keep malignant tumors from spreading to other parts of the body.

7. Lack of congenital limbs

A child can be born with complete or partial absence of limbs. To facilitate scientific communication (International Organization for Standardization (ISO) develops an accurate classification system. Classification is built on an anatomical basis due to failure of formation. In the uterus, blood flow to the limb can be limited due to other tissues, As a result, the limb can be permanently lost, and babies born with what is known as a congenital amputation.
