Healthy snack options for children with kidney disease
A good snack for children with kidney disease should be energy-dense, but low in protein, potassium, phosphorus and sodium. Foods like this will not aggravate your little one's kidney function.
The ingredients needed to make it are easily found in the market, and are not much different from those used to cook dishes for other family members.
1. Sweet potato balls
Sweet potatoes are a high source of potassium, but that doesn't mean children don't eat them, you know! Sweet potatoes contain many nutrients that are very beneficial for maintaining children's health.
You can reduce the potassium content in sweet potatoes by first slicing them into thin chips, then soaking them in warm water for two hours. Make sure the amount of soaking water is 10 times the total weight of the sweet potato.
Another way is to boil the sweet potato twice to remove the potassium and phosphorus levels.
Ingredients for making healthy sweet potato balls (2 servings):
- 250 grams of sweet potato (2 medium sized fruits)
- 2 tbsp tapioca flour
- Refined sugar to taste
- Vanilla powder to taste
How to make:
- After soaking in the method above, steam the sweet potato until soft then puree.
- Mix with flour, sugar and vanilla powder. Stir until the mixture is evenly distributed.
- Shape round, then fry until brown.
- Serve warm.
2. Boiled potato with onion seasoning (garlic mashed potato)
Just like sweet potatoes, potatoes are also high in potassium and phosphorus which may aggravate the kidneys of children. So before processing potatoes as a snack for children with kidney problems, prepare them first in the way above.
Clean the potatoes, cut into quarters, and soak in warm water for two hours. Make sure the amount of soaking water is greater than the total weight of the potatoes.
Ingredients required (for 1 serving):
- 2 medium potatoes
- Pepper and garlic powder to taste.Don't use salt
- 4 tbsp butter (butter)
- 60 ml of fresh cow's milk. Do not use skim milk orlow fat because the content of phosphorus and potassium tends to be higher
How to make:
- Boil potatoes that have been soaked for 2 hours (food leaching) twice.
- Mash the potatoes until smooth, add pepper and garlic powder.
- Gradually add butter and milk, stirring until blended.
- Serve warm.
3. Fruit sorbet
Fruit that tastes fresh sweet can help increase children's appetite. Not to mention the intake of vitamins and minerals which can make the child's body more stamina.
If the child doesn't like to eat cut fruit, make it into sorbet. Sorbet is ice made from fruit, water, and sweetener (sugar or honey) without milk and cream.
Choose fruits that are low in potassium and phosphorus, such as strawberries, grapes, pineapples, watermelon, or pears. Avoid making ice from bananas, avocados, oranges, melons, and dates.
How to make fruit sorbet:
- Cut selected fruit into large cubes, and store infreezerat least 3-4 hours until frozen (can be overnight).
- When ready to serve, blend the fruit until it is smooth and has a texture like shaved ice.
- You can add liquid sugar, honey, or lemon juice to taste.
