What is a bilateral vasectomy?
Vasectomy is a permanent method of contraception for men. A bilateral vasectomy procedure involves cutting two ejaculatory ducts, which transport sperm from your testicles to your penis. The cutting is done so that the sperm does not mix with the semen. Since semen that does not contain sperm cannot fertilize the ovum, a vasectomy can be used as a contraceptive method.
When do I need to have a bilateral vasectomy?
If you and your partner don't want to use another method of contraception, you can consider a bilateral vasectomy procedure.
Precautions & warnings
What should I know before having a bilateral vasectomy?
The removal of the ejaculatory ducts will not affect your sexual abilities, or erectile sensation and function. The amount of semen during orgasm will not decrease after you have a vasectomy. It's just that your semen no longer contains sperm. A vasectomy is generally safe and an effective method, but you also need to understand the possible complications before deciding to have a vasectomy.
It is important that you know the warnings and precautions before taking this test. If you have any questions, consult your doctor for further information and instructions.
Process
What should I do before a bilateral vasectomy?
This procedure is done after you have been given anesthesia, local or general. Before the procedure, you will be asked to shave your pubic hair under the supervision of a doctor. Then wash and rinse your genital area. You are allowed to have breakfast first before starting the procedure. You will be asked to bring a compress filled with ice cubes to support your testicles (scrotum) when you go to the clinic. It is advisable to have someone, a family member or relative, accompany you to the hospital.
How is the bilateral vasectomy process?
The bilateral vasectomy procedure takes about 15-20 minutes.
The surgeon will make small incisions on each side of your scrotum. In some cases, the doctor will only make an incision right in the middle of the scrotum. Then, the doctor will cut the ejaculate from the base of the testicles to the tip of the penis and sew the two ends so that they are no longer connected to each other.
What should I do after a bilateral vasectomy?
You can go home the same day after this procedure. You may feel pain in your testicles for a few days.
You can return to your daily routine (work / school) two days later, or a week after that if your job involves manual labor and uses a lot of labor.
Regular exercise will help you regain your strength to carry out your daily activities. Before starting, ask your team of doctors for advice on a sport that is right for you.
The doctor will ask for 1-2 samples of your semen after you ejaculate 20 times, after surgery. This sample will be tested to check if any sperm is still in it.
If you have questions related to this test process, please consult your doctor for a better understanding.
