What is Tiotropium Bromide used for?
Tiotropium is a drug to control and prevent symptoms caused by ongoing lung disease (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which includes bronchitis and emphysema), for example wheezing and shortness of breath.
This medication works by relaxing the muscles around the airways so they open up and you can breathe more easily. Tiotropium belongs to a class of drugs known as anticholinergics. Controlling the symptoms of breathing problems can facilitate your daily activities.
This medicine must be used regularly for it to work effectively. This medication does not work quickly and should not be used to relieve sudden breathing problems. If wheezing or shortness of breath occurs suddenly, use your fast-relief inhaler (such as albuterol, also called salbutamol in some countries) as prescribed.
How do you use Tiotropium Bromide?
Follow the directions for performing the test spray in the air if you are using the inhaler for the first time or if you have not used it for more than 3 days or more than 21 days. Make sure to spray away from your face so that it doesn't get into your eyes. A slow-moving mist is a sign that the inhaler is working properly.
Inhale this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor, usually 2 sprays once a day. Do not inhale more than 2 sprays in 24 hours.
Keep this medication away from your eyes. This medication may cause eye pain / irritation, temporary blurred vision, and other vision changes. Therefore, when using the inhaler, close your lips against the inhaler mouthpiece.
