Many people think they will be safe from pollution when they are indoors or at home. In fact, air pollution can also occur indoors.
So, how can this happen and how to deal with it? Listen to the complete narrative of the chairman of the Indonesian Lung Doctors Association, dr. Agus Dwi Susanto, Sp.P (K).
Why does indoor air pollution occur?
According to dr. Agus Dwi Susanto, when met in the Kuningan area, Monday (5/8), said that the pollution that has spread at home and indoors is often underestimated.
In fact, this one pollution can cause various diseases without you knowing it.
He continued, there are several factors that cause this condition to occur, namely:
- Burning activities, such as cigarette smoke or the use of candles
- Household activities, namely cooking with cooking oil and gas stoves without exhaust fan.
- Household furniture and the use of curtains that can harbor germs, viruses and bacteria.
- Animals or insects clinging to carpets and sofas
- Not maintaining the cleanliness of home ventilation and electronic items, such as air conditioning.
Various activities and the use of daily items can actually decrease the air quality in the house.
This can increase the risk of respiratory problems due to breathing bad air even when you are at home.
Due to air pollution in the room
"Actually, the health impacts of indoor and outdoor pollution are almost the same. Starting from acute respiratory tract irritation (ISPA) to pharyngitis due to the disturbed mucosal system, "said dr. Agus.
People who have a history of asthma can also experience worsening of symptoms if they are in a room filled with pollution.
Being in a room with bad air quality for a long time will certainly worsen your health.
This condition can be indicated when you sneeze when entering a room. This happens when indoor air pollution is bad enough.
Efforts to prevent indoor air pollution
So that your health condition does not continue to worsen due to pollution that occurs in the house, you need to overcome this problem.
According to dr. Agus, protection from indoor air pollution can be done by wearing a mask and reducing sources of pollution, such as:
- Do not smoke and reduce the use of candles
- Routinely clean the ventilation of the house so that dust and air from outside are not mixed
- Maintain cleanliness in the room, such as sweeping, wiping the furniture so it doesn't get dusty, or cleaning the air conditioner every 3-6 months.
- Putting plants that can absorb air pollution, such as aloe vera.
- Use water purifier to maintain air quality
- Changing clothes after going from one place so that bacteria and viruses do not stick to the mattress and other places.
- Reduce the use of air freshener if there are family members who are sensitive or have respiratory problems.
- Using personal protective equipment, such as masks
The chairman of the Indonesian Lung Doctors Association added that opening ventilation also needs to pay attention to the timing.
He recommends opening windows in the morning and letting in the morning sun to reduce germs and bacteria.
However, don't forget to monitor the outdoor air quality before opening the windows. This is done considering that lately morning air can no longer be used as a benchmark as the healthiest air due to higher levels of pollution.
So, to protect yourself and your family from the dangers of indoor air pollution, don't forget to take an immune supplement that contains 1,000 mg of vitamin C, vitamin D, and zinc. These contents can help increase immunity against diseases caused by pollution.
