What is the drug Sulfinpyrazone used for?
Sulfinpyrazone is a drug to prevent gout and gout due to arthritis. This medicine will not treat sudden gout attacks / severe gout attacks and may actually make them worse. Gout occurs when there is an increase in uric acid levels that are too high in your body so that crystals form in the joints causing pain. Sulfinpyrazone belongs to a class of drugs known as uricosurics. This helps the kidneys to get rid of uric acid, thereby lowering high uric acid levels and preventing crystals from forming. Lowering uric acid levels can also help your kidneys work.
How are the rules for using the drug Sulfinpyrazone?
Take this medication, usually twice daily or as directed by your doctor. Drink it with food, milk, or antacids to reduce stomach upset. To prevent kidney stones, it is best to drink a full glass of water (8 ounces or 240 milliliters) with the respective dose and at least 8 other glasses a day while taking this medicine. If your doctor has directed you to limit your fluid intake, consult your doctor for further instructions. Your doctor may also instruct you on ways to reduce acidity in your urine (for example, avoiding large amounts of ascorbic acid / vitamin C) to prevent kidney stones. Your doctor may direct you to take other drugs (for example, sodium bicarbonate, citrate) to make your urine less acidic.
Dosage is based on your condition and response to treatment. Your doctor may direct you to take a low dose at first, then adjust your dose based on your uric acid levels and your gout symptoms. After you have been symptom free for a few months and your uric acid levels are normal, your doctor may decrease the dose to the lowest effective dose. Follow the directions given by your doctor carefully.
If you are also taking Cholestyramine, take Sulfinpyrazone at least 1 hour before or 4-6 hours after Cholestyramine. Consult your doctor for more details.
Sulfinpyrazone does not have to be started when a gout attack is sudden / severe. Wait until your current attacks stop before starting this drug. You may experience an increased number of gout attacks for several months after starting this treatment while your body gets rid of extra uric acid. If you have a gout attack while taking Sulfinpyrazone, continue taking it along with the medication for gout pain.
Sulfinpyrazone is not for pain relief. To reduce pain from gout, continue to take medications prescribed for pain from gout attacks (eg, colchicine, ibuprofen, indomethacin) as directed by your doctor.
Take this medicine regularly to get optimal benefits. To help you remember, take this medication at the same time each day. Do not stop using this medication before consulting a doctor.
How to store Sulfinpyrazone?
This medication is best stored at room temperature, away from direct light and damp places. Don't keep it in the bathroom. Don't freeze it. Other brands of this drug may have different storage rules. Observe the storage instructions on the product package or ask your pharmacist. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
Do not flush medicines down the toilet or down the drain unless instructed to do so. Discard this product when it has expired or when it is no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company about how to safely dispose of your product.

Allergy

Children
Studies on this drug have been conducted only in adult patients, and there is no specific information comparing the use of Sulfinpyrazone in children with those used in other age groups.
Elderly
Many drugs have not been studied specifically in the elderly. Side effects
What are the possible side effects of Sulfinpyrazone?
Stop using Sulfinpyrazone and seek emergency medical attention immediately if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of your throat, swelling of your lips, tongue, or face, or hives).
Other, less serious side effects may be more likely. Heartburn, nausea, and stomach upset are the most common side effects of Sulfinpyrazone therapy. Take each dose with food, milk, or an antacid to reduce these side effects.
Call your doctor as soon as possible if you have an acute attack of arthritis gout.

- Stomach ulcers or other stomach or intestinal problems (or history) - the chance of serious side effects may increase; Also, Sulfinpyrazone may not work very well for treating gout if some type of kidney disease is occurring

What is the dose of Sulfinpyrazone for adults?
Initial: 200 to 400 mg orally given in 2 divided doses, with food or milk, gradually increasing as needed for the full maintenance dose within 1 week.
Maintenance: 400 mg daily in 2 divided doses; can increase to 800 mg daily or reduce as low as possible to at least 200 mg a day after the increase in uric acid has been controlled. Continue treatment without interruption even in the presence of acute exacerbations, which can be simultaneously treated with colchicine. Patients previously controlled with other uricosuric therapies may be transferred to Sulfinpyrazone at the full maintenance dose.
What is the dosage of Sulfinpyrazone for children?
Safety and effectiveness have not been determined in pediatric patients younger than 18 years.
