Maybe you often hear the circulating information about wearing underwear while sleeping after having sex. Some say you still have to wear it, some tell you to just take it off. So that you are no longer confused and mistaken, here are the facts according to the expert.
After sex, should you sleep in your underwear or not?
After having sex, the body will definitely sweat and moisture, including the sex organs. You probably already know that hot, sweaty, humid, and dark areas make perfect places for germs to breed. Therefore, you must pay extra attention to the intimate organs so as not to stimulate bacteria and fungi to breed in them.
Sara Twogood, MD, assistant lecturer in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine, states that you shouldn't need to wear underwear while sleeping after sex. This of course aims to prevent bacteria and fungi from reproducing and to provide room for the intimate organs to breathe.
Do not let you reuse used damp underwear while sleeping after sex. The reason is, this increases your risk for various health problems ranging from fungal infections, bacteria, to urinary tract infections.
If you are not used to taking off your underwear while sleeping, replace your underwear with a dry, cotton one. Cotton underwear is usually able to absorb sweat and keep your sex organs able to breathe. That way, your underwear won't stay damp all night.
Don't forget to clean your intimate organs
It is better if you do not sleep right away after having sex without cleaning your genitals first. The reason is, the infection will lurk you if you just let it sleep in a damp state. Semen, vaginal fluids, sweat, and lubricants should be rinsed and cleaned before you sleep.
Cleaning it with a towel or tissue alone can actually dry it out but it would be best to rinse it off with water. Wash the vagina or penis with water and unscented soap.
You don't need to clean it with a lot of scented and foamy soap. This is because the vagina has the ability to clean itself. Scented soaps can actually damage the natural pH of your vagina and leave you vulnerable to infections.
After that, dry it properly so that no more fluid remains in the sex organs. It is also a good idea to dry wet parts of the sheets with a clean towel or tissue. This is again to prevent bacteria from multiplying in it.
Don't forget to drink water after sex, especially for women. Alyssa Dweck, MD, a gynecologist in New York, states that drinking water will encourage you to urinate. Well, this urine will later help remove bacteria from the rectum at the end of the urethra that enter during intercourse. That way, the bacteria will be washed away before they cause infection.
