COVID-19 cases are increasing across Indonesia, in the last week the increase in cases averaged nearly 5,000 per day. Many cases of COVID-19 transmission are thought to occur from people without symptoms (OTG), including those who are still in the early stages of infection so that the symptoms have not yet appeared.

How many cases of COVID-19 transmission have occurred from OTG patients?

Epidemiological evidence suggests that about one in five people who are infected have no symptoms (OTG /asymptomatic). According to one study, people who feel healthy or without symptoms may not be aware of their infection.

The American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that OTG and COVID-19 patients who are asymptomatic are likely to account for more than 50% of the transmission rate. According to the CDC, 24% of people without symptoms pass the virus on to other people and another 35% pass it on to others before they develop symptoms.

"Most cases of SARS-CoV-2 transmission have occurred from people without symptoms," the CDC said, reiterating the importance of everyone wearing a mask.

COVID-19 is mostly transmitted through respiratory fluids splashes (droplet) that comes out when someone talks, coughs, or sneezes. The use of an appropriate mask can help reduce the distance the virus exits through the droplet. Later the CDC also said that masks can help prevent someone from inhaling the virus from large and small droplets.

According to the Director of the CDC, Anthony Fauci, entering the end of November there were many cases of transmission from people without symptoms because they were carelessly wearing masks. This incident happened a lot in the cluster of friends and family gatherings.

"Group meetings of friends and family indoors to eat together are a major source of asymptomatic spread," Fauci said in a virtual lecture for the University of Virginia School of Medicine on Wednesday (18/11). "This appears to be driving infection more than the clearer arrangement of opening public places," he continued.

These facts serve as a reminder to plan to spend your year-end holidays safer and adhere to health protocols as strictly as possible.

Why is OTG contagious?

Research shows that people without symptoms are generally less contagious than those with symptoms because they don't shed much of the virus. But a false sense of security comes from not feeling pain, which makes him and those around him less careful. It is this possible reason that makes OTG contribute the most to the number of COVID-19 transmission.

However, several other studies say that OTG patients have a viral load (viral load) compared with symptomatic patients. It's just that people without symptoms may have an antibody response that can neutralize the virus more quickly.

According to Muge Cevik, infectious disease researcher St Andrews University, United Kingdom, with this fact, tracing and testing should also be focused on OTG to reduce the majority of transmission incidents.

Cevik said that people without symptoms should do well in self-isolation. In addition, to avoid transmission from OTG, everyone still has to take steps to prevent transmission, such as maintaining distance, hand hygiene, and wearing masks.
