What is Ropivacaine used for?

What is the dosage for Ropivacaine for adults?
Dosage for Local Anesthesia
Lumbar epidural method:
- Initial: 75 to 200 mg injected via lumbar epidural administration. The action starts for 10 - 30 minutes and lasts 2 - 6 hours.
- Maintenance: 12 - 28 mg / hour given by lumbar epidural infusion.
Thoracic epidural:
- Initial: 25 to 75 mg injected via a thoracic epidural administration.
- Maintenance: 12 - 28 mg / hour given by thoracic epidural infusion.
- Cumulative epidural doses of up to 770 mg over a 24 hour period for postoperative pain have been well tolerated in adult patients.
Nerve block:
Major nerve blocks, such as brachial plexus blocks, can be prescribed by injecting 175 - 250 mg of ropivacaine into the area of the nerve. The action begins in 15-30 minutes with a duration of 5 - 8 hours.
Field blocks, such as minor nerve blocks or infiltration, can be determined by injecting 5 - 200 mg of ropivacaine. Action begins in 1 - 15 minutes with an estimated duration of 2 - 6 hours.
Dosage for Caesarean section:
Lumbar epidural method: 100 to 150 mg injected via lumbar epidural administration. The action begins in 15-25 minutes and lasts 2 - 4 hours.
Recommended 0.5% fluids at doses not exceeding 150 mg for cesarean section.
Dosage to reduce pain during childbirth:
Lumbar epidural method:
- Initial: 20 to 40 mg injected via lumbar epidural administration. The action starts in 10-15 minutes and lasts 0.5 - 1.5 hours.
- Maintenance: 12 - 28 mg / hour given by lumbar epidural infusion.
- Additional injections, or also called top-ups, can be done at a dose of 20-30 per hour.
What is the dosage of Ropivacaine for children?
- Caudal block for children 2 - 8 years: 2 mg / kg
- Epidural Block (other than caudal block): 1.7 mg / kg
- Epidural continuous infusion for children 4 months - 7 years: Initial dose 1 mg / kg followed by 0.4 mg / kg / hour continuous epidural infusion.

Side effects
What side effects might Ropivacaine have?
Seek immediate medical help if you experience any of the following signs of an allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Tell your nurse right away if you experience any of the following serious side effects:
- Feeling restless, tired, in a daze, or feeling like you might pass out
- Impaired speech or vision
- Ear ringing, metallic taste, numbness or tingling around the mouth, tremors
- Seizures
- Weak or shallow breath
- Slow and weak heartbeat
- Fast heartbeat, gasping, feeling hot
Less serious side effects include:
- Nauseous vomit
- Headache, back pain
- Fever
- Itchy rash
- Numbness or tingling sensation
- Impaired urination or sexual function.
Not everyone experiences the following side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have concerns about certain side effects, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
