Most of us always hope to be even taller, maybe two-five centimeters, anyway, at least. Departing from despair, some choose to spend to buy body-enhancing supplements. whereas, its effectiveness and safety are still in doubt.
Do not be sad. There is one real medical procedure that can actually raise the body, even up to 30 centimeters. This body-enhancing operation is called distraction osteogenesis.
What is distraction osteogenesis?
Distraction osteogenesis is a surgical technique for lengthening short bones. This medical surgical procedure was originally developed in the 1950's to correct the problem of leg length imbalance or dwarfism. Distraction osteogenesis is also an important procedure for correcting jawbone or facial bone defects in children who have hemifacial microsomia (HFM).
Fast forward several decades later, this technique is returning to popularity as a guaranteed way to increase height. Distraction osteogenesis surgery for height is basically performed by breaking the bones of the leg (calculated), then they are pulled apart slowly and left apart to make enough room for new bone growth from the ends of the fracture.
During this time the new bone grows, your leg will be supported by a special device called a distractor. The two bones involved in the goal of elevating the posture are the thighbone and the lower leg bone.
What is the operating procedure for this body enhancer?
There are several stages of surgical procedures to increase height. The leg fracture, technically known as the osteotomy phase, is the first stage. The leg bones, usually the shinbone (tibia), can be completely broken in half or cut into separate smaller pieces.
This stage is then followed by a latent stage, in which you will be sent home with a broken (deliberate) leg for a few days while your body begins to heal. After that, you will be asked to return to the hospital.
In the hospital, the doctor will place a distractor, a bone separator that surrounds the leg and is tightened so that each wire is embedded into the bone. The distractor not only serves to stabilize the shape of the bone, but also continues to separate the distance from the fracture ends - at least 1-2 mm every day. While the distractor separates the fracture, tissue thickening (callus) occurs in the empty space between the bones. Over time, the callus in the fracture cavity is replaced by the collagen structure.
Collagen is a protein that forms connective tissue in the body. Blood vessels will start to grow around the collagen, and special cells called osteoblasts enter to start making new bone material. At this stage, the bones are not completely mineralized, or are not as hard as actual bones. Finally, the consolidation phase, which refers to the mineralization of new bone material when the desired height has been reached. This phase takes about a month for every additional centimeter.
What are the risks of body enhancing surgery?
In theory, the distraction osteogenesis procedure is indeed effective in lengthening the bone by 10-15 centimeters. However, doctors strongly do not recommend anyone to do this procedure just to have an ideal body posture. One reason is that the distraction osteogenesis procedure is very painful and takes a very long time to heal.
As with any surgical procedure, there are several problems that may arise if caution is not exercised during postoperative care. Embedded wires penetrating soft tissue and bone can become infected and painful. Resetting the distractor to separate the bones is done manually, and requires extreme precision and control - too sooner or later tightening the tool can jeopardize the results. Blood vessels or nerves may not stretch at the same rate as the bone and can result in loss of function.
In addition, distraction osteogenesis brings with it a variety of other possible complications, including changes in the direction of bone growth or leg alignment and stiffening of the joints. That is why this procedure must be carried out under the supervision of a highly trained surgeon.
But the procedure for body-enhancing doesn't stop there. After the success becomes higher without any obstacles, you will be required to follow physical therapy for several months to be able to walk back to normal. The whole process of elevating this body takes 4-6 months until you can do your daily activities as usual.
