COVID-19 infects humans regardless of age, young people can be infected without exception. In Yogyakarta, a team of COVID-19 funeral volunteers buried the youngest victim they had ever handled.
Sunday (17/5) Wisnu Adityawardana, a member of the funeral team, received a small coffin that was neatly wrapped along with a letter of assignment. The letter states that the body is a baby aged 10 days with the status of Patient Under Supervision (PDP).
So far, Wahyu has buried the bodies of COVID-19 of various ages and this baby is the body of the youngest COVID-19 patient he has ever buried.
"This little chest feels very heavy," said Wisnu in a choked voice. Burying the bodies of COVID-19 patients is an emotionally tough task.

"I hope this is the last chest we bury. Please stay home, follow the rules physical distancing just a little while until things get better, "he said.
Wisnu hopes that by sharing the story of the funeral of the baby victims of COVID-19, it can remind the public that the corona virus can infect anyone.
Several cases of infants infected with COVID-19
Information about how the 10-day-old baby contracted COVID-19 was not known by the funeral team. Due to safety reasons, information about this baby is also not made public.
However, apart from these babies, there have been at least dozens of cases of babies contracting COVID-19 from several sources of transmission. The following are some of the cases announced by their respective regional officials.
- In Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara, a 3-month-old baby was positively infected with COVID-19 and had to be treated intensively in an isolation room. After tracking it, it was discovered that this baby was infected by both parents.
- In South Sulawesi, a 3 month old baby was found to have contracted the corona virus on his way home from Malaysia with his mother, who is a TKI. This baby is believed to have contracted it from other people because the mother tested negative.
- In Malang, a 1.5 year old baby is also infected with COVID-19. This baby was infected with COVID-19 after experiencing symptoms of shortness of breath and was taken to the hospital for further treatment. It is known that the parents of the babies work as meatball traders on a daily basis, although they do not know the source of the infection.
- A baby born prematurely at dr. Kariadi Semarang is infected with COVID-19. Because it is premature, this baby has to undergo treatment for 3 weeks in the hospital. This baby is suspected of contracting the corona virus because of being hospitalized for too long or in medical terms it is called nosocomial transmission.
Cases of newborns infected with COVID-19 have also occurred in several other countries. One such case occurred in Russia where a baby is believed to have contracted it from its mother who first tested positive for COVID-19 while pregnant.
How do babies get COVID-19?
Transmission of COVID-19 in infants is the same as the transmission route in general, namely through droplet (saliva splashes) or touching the surface of an object affected by the corona virus. But especially for newborns who are declared infected with COVID-19, scientists are still finding out more about the transmission route.
So far there is not enough evidence of direct mother-to-fetal transmission, as it is believed that transmission can occur during childbirth. However, some published studies and case examples are still on a small scale.
