What is Oxacillin used for?
Oxacillin is a drug to treat many types of infections caused by bacteria, such as staphylococcal infections (also called "staph"). This drug belongs to the penicillin group of antibiotics.
Oxacillin can also be used for other purposes not listed in the medication guide.
What are the rules for using Oxacillin drugs?
Use this medication as prescribed for you. Do not take the drug in larger quantities, or use it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label.
Take this medicine with a glass of water.
Oxacillin should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.
To make sure this medicine is helping your condition, your blood will need to be tested regularly. Your kidney or liver function may also need to be tested. Don't miss any of the checkups your doctor has scheduled.
Use this medication according to the treatment schedule prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated. Oxacillin will not treat viral infections such as flu or colds.
Do not share Oxacillin with other people, even if they have the same symptoms as you.
This medicine may cause interference with certain medical tests that you are doing. Tell the doctor who treats you that you are using Oxacillin.

How to store Oxacillin?
This medication is best stored at room temperature, away from direct light and damp places. Don't keep it in the bathroom. Don't freeze it. Other brands of this drug may have different storage rules. Do not flush medicines down the toilet or down the drain unless instructed to do so. Discard this product when it has expired or when it is no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist or local waste disposal company about how to safely dispose of your product.

What should be considered before using Oxacillin drugs?
Before using Oxacillin, tell your doctor if you are allergic to cephalosporins such as Ceclor, Ceftin, Duricef, Keflex, and others, or if you have asthma, liver disease, kidney disease, or a history of any type of allergy.
Is Oxacillin safe for pregnant and lactating women?
There are no adequate studies regarding the risks of using this drug in pregnant or breastfeeding women. Always consult your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before using this medication. This drug is included in the risk of pregnancy category B according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). (A = No risk, B = No risk in some studies, C = Possible risk, D = Positive evidence of risk, X = Contraindicated, N = Unknown)
Side effects
What are the possible side effects of Oxacillin?
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: nausea, vomiting, sweating, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or feel like you might pass out.
Call your doctor if you have any of the following serious side effects:
- Fever, sore throat, and headache with severe blistering, peeling skin, and red skin rash
- Diarrhea that is watery or bloody
- Fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms
- Easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness
- Urinating less than usual or not at all
- Severe skin rash, itching, or peeling
- Agitation, confusion, unusual thoughts or behavior
- Seizures
Less serious side effects may include:
- Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain
- Itching or discharge in the vagina
- Headache
- Swollen, black, or "hairy" tongue
- Thrush (white patches in the mouth or throat)

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to amoxicillin or to other penicillin antibiotics, such as:

- Carbenicillin (Geocillin);
- Diclo-Oxacillin (Dycill, Dynapen);
- Penicillin (Beepen-VK, Ledercillin VK, Pen-V, Pen-Vee K, Pfizerpen, V-Cillin K, Veetids, and others)
Can certain foods and drinks interfere with the work of Oxacillin drugs?
Certain drugs should not be used with meals or when eating certain foods because drug interactions can occur. Consuming alcohol or tobacco with certain drugs can also cause interactions to occur. Discuss your use of drugs with food, alcohol, or tobacco with your health care provider.
What health conditions can interfere with the performance of the drug Oxacillin?
The presence of other health problems in your body may affect the use of this drug. Tell your doctor if you have other health problems .:
- Asthma
- Liver disease
- Kidney illness
- Bleeding disorders or blood clotting disorders
- History of diarrhea caused by taking antibiotics
- Allergy history

What is the dose of the drug Oxacillin for adults?
Usual Adult Dose for Bacterial Infection:
Manufacturer Recommendation:
Mild to moderate infections: 250 to 500 mg IV or IM every 4 to 6 hours
Severe infection: 1 g IV or IM every 4-6 hours
Duration of therapy: Therapy should be continued for at least 14 days in severe staphylococcal infections. Therapy should be continued for at least 48 hours after the patient has no fever, is asymptomatic, and has a negative culture. Endocarditis and osteomyelitis may require a longer duration of therapy.
Approved indications: Treatment of infections caused by susceptibility to penicillinase-producing staphylococci

Mild to moderate infections: 250 to 500 mg IV or IM every 4 to 6 hours

What to do in an emergency or overdose?
In case of an emergency or overdose, contact the local emergency services provider (119) or immediately to the nearest hospital emergency department.
What should I do if I forget to take medicine or forget to take medicine?
If you forget a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, when it is nearing the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the usual dosing schedule. Don't double the dose.
