Functions & Usage
What is Nafarelin used for?
Nafarelin is a drug used to treat endometriosis, a condition in women in which tissue that is normally in the uterus grows in the wrong place. This medication reduces abnormal tissue as well as symptoms of endometriosis (eg, pelvic pain, painful menstrual cramps, and pain during / after sex).
This drug is also used in children to treat certain types of precocious puberty (central precocious puberty, gonadotropin-dependent). This medication helps to slow bone aging and height growth rate so that it can be near normal and to stop or reverse signs of premature puberty (eg, breast growth in girls, growth of sexual organs in boys).
Nafarelin is a man-made hormone that is similar to the natural hormone made by the body (gonadotropin-releasing hormone-GnRH). This drug works by reducing the hormone testosterone in men and the hormone estrogen in women and girls.
What are the rules for using the drug Nafarelin?
Follow the instructions on the correct method if you are using it for the first time.
Gently blow your nose before using this medication. For younger children, it may be necessary to clean the nose with a spray.
Use this medication usually twice daily (every 12 hours) as directed by your doctor. If you use more than 1 spray at a time, wait 30 seconds between each spray. Avoid spraying this medicine in your eyes. Also, avoid sneezing during or immediately after using this medicine as this can decrease the amount of drug that is absorbed. Follow detailed instructions for using the spray and cleaning the nozzle. It is highly recommended that you always clean the nozzle after each use.
Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. The length of therapy for women on this medication to treat endometriosis is 6 months unless directed by your doctor to do less or more than the general duration of the therapy. The length of therapy for children experiencing precocious puberty depends on when the doctor decides the right time to resume puberty.
Use this drug regularly to get optimal benefits. To help you remember, take this medication at the same time each day.
Consult your doctor or pharmacist to find out how long each nasal spray bottle should last. Don't use the nasal spray bottle again, even though there may be some medication left, as doing so could result in you getting too low a dose. Make sure you get your medicine refills a few days early so you don't run out of medicine.
Do not increase your dose or take this drug more often than prescribed. Your condition will not improve any faster, and it may actually increase the risk of serious side effects. Also, do not stop using this drug without your doctor's approval.
If you need to use a decongestant nasal spray at the same time as this medicine, take Nafarelin first and wait at least 2 hours after you use a decongestant nasal spray.
When you first start using this medicine, your symptoms may worsen (for example, increased vaginal bleeding in endometriosis, or vaginal / menstrual bleeding, increased breast size / pubic hair, oily skin, or body odor at early puberty). Such symptoms may improve after the first month of treatment. Tell your doctor if symptoms get worse or last more than 2 months.
