Some people cry very easily, even from watching sad movies or hearing heartwarming stories. On the other hand, there are also people who find it very difficult to cry even though they actually feel sad. What caused the difference?
Why do humans cry?
Crying is a natural human response to the emotions they experience. The emotions that make a person cry are usually pain and sadness, but there are other conditions that can trigger them.
For example, a person may cry easily when they see something beautiful or when they feel touched. You don't feel any negative emotions at all, but you do respond in the same way as people who experience sadness.
Crying is actually a sign that something is happening to you. Whether you are aware of it or not, you may be feeling sad, frustrated, experiencing an emotional rush, or just wanting to get someone else's attention.
This behavior is believed to provide a relieving effect because your body releases stress-causing hormones and the various types of toxins that accompany it. The relief that comes from ultimately reduces the risk of depression and anxiety. This is an advantage for those who cry easily.
It doesn't stop there, crying is also related to the function of humans as social creatures. This behavior generates empathy for those around you, especially those with whom you have a good relationship.
Why do some people cry easily?
People who cry a lot may be familiar with the taunt of “weep”. In fact, crying doesn't make you a weak person. This behavior actually shows that you are mentally strong.
Crying is a self-protective mechanism when you experience an overwhelming emotion. If a certain emotion makes you cry, that means you can find healthy ways to express that emotion.
You who are easy to cry are not the people who are always sad. Instead, you'll be healthier, happier, and better able to understand yourself. You dare to 'communicate' through crying, and are honest with yourself and others.
In fact, the tendency to cry has a number of benefits. Among other things, strengthening relationships with other people, speeding up self-healing, and making you healthier physically and psychologically.
Then, what about people who don't cry easily?
The inability to cry is also a natural thing. However, this condition can also be a sign of melancholic depression. This is especially so if the inability to cry has been ongoing or is affecting your life.
The term "melancholy" is often used to describe people who are sensitive and cry easily. Karl Jaspers, an expert in the field of mental disorders, provides a slightly different definition.
According to him, melancholy people do not understand how they feel. They seem to have walls that limit themselves from emotional outburst. This wall makes them unable to recognize, or simply feel emotions.
Not crying easily is not a sign that you are a tough person. On the other hand, this can actually be bad for your mental health. Especially if you always deliberately hold back from crying.
Cry when you feel like doing it. Ignore the misconception that only weak people cry. Crying out your emotions is normal behavior, and it can even benefit your mental health.
