You are working or studying as you normally would, and then suddenly you feel like you are going to do something. However, what was that going to be done, huh? Relax, you are not the only person who has experienced the phenomenon of suddenly forgetting what to do. These occurrences are normal and generally do not indicate a specific health condition. To understand why you might suddenly forget something, consider the following explanation.
Why did you suddenly forget?
There are several reasons why you suddenly forget what to do. Here are three things that get you the most blank suddenly.
1. You walk out of the room
Researchers have proven that stepping out of a room can make the brain feel like it'sreset or reset. Think of your brain as like a computer system. You may have run several commands, one of which is getting drinking water in the kitchen. Then, you get up from your seat and leave your study. The act of leaving your workspace is like shutting down and restarting your system. As a result, commands that were being executed are deleted from the system unexpectedly. So, when you get to the kitchen you are confused about what to do.
This happens because of the complexity of how the human brain works. All the information stored in your memory is not always available and can be retrieved at any time. Various information and commands in the brain also have a validity period. If the information or command is deemed irrelevant, the brain will remove it from short-term memory.
When you leave a room, your brain assumes that the information and orders that were processed in that room are no longer valid. The information will then be discarded so that there is enough room for new information and instructions. Thus, decisions you make in a room can be forgotten when you move places.
2. You are overly anxious
If you often suddenly forget something, you may be overly anxious. According to dr. Maria Caserta, a clinical psychiatrist at the University of Illinois in the United States, says this unconscious anxiety can throw your mind out of focus. Because your mind is wandering, you can't clearly remember what to do.
If you frequently forget because of your anxiety, calm yourself by taking deep breaths. After calming down, repeat your last action, as if re-enacting the incident. This will help the brain organize and process information more neatly.
3. You're multitasking
Are you working on multiple things at once? If so, it's no wonder you suddenly forget what you want to do. Observations made by dr. Maria Caserta shows that the human brain can only really focus on doing two to four things at once.
More than that, all the details and information that enter the brain becomes chaotic. This is because the various nerves and neurons in the brain are overactive, but there is no clear priority to guide the work of the brain. So, the brain will have difficulty storing this information in short or long term memory.
Does this mean that I am senile?
Suddenly forgetting is not a dangerous thing. This can happen to anyone, even children and young people. So, you don't need to worry about the possibility of senility (dementia).
However, pay attention if you often have trouble finding the right words, experiencing changes mood, forgetting directions, repeating the work that has been done, absent-minded, and so unable to complete simple jobs. These can be signs of dementia.
