What is the drug Kanamycin used for?
Kanamycin is a drug to treat serious infections caused by bacteria. This drug belongs to the group of aminoglycoside drugs. This drug attacks bacteria in the body.
Kanamycin can also be used for other purposes not listed in the medication guide.
What are the rules for using the drug Kanamycin?
Kanamycin is given by injection into a vein or muscle. Your doctor, nurse, or other health care provider will give this injection. You can be taught how to use your medicine at home. Do not inject this medication yourself if you do not fully understand how to administer the injection and how to properly dispose of needles, IV tubes, and other equipment used to administer drugs.
This medicine must be given slowly when given by IV infusion and can take up to 60 minutes to complete the dose.
Do not put your dose of kanamycin in a syringe until you are ready to give yourself the injection. Do not use the medicine if it has changed color or has particles in it. Ask your doctor for a new prescription.
Use each single-use needle only once. Dispose of used needles in a special container (ask your pharmacist where you can find this container and how to dispose of it). Keep this container out of reach of children and pets.
To make sure this drug is not causing harmful effects, your kidney function will need to be tested regularly. Your hearing may also need to be checked. Don't miss any scheduled screening appointments.
Use the drug within the specified time. Your symptoms may subside before the infection is completely cleared. Kanamycin will not treat common viral infections such as flu or colds.

How to store Kanamycin?

Before using Kanamycin,
- You are allergic to any medicines including kanamycin or other types of aminoglycosides, including amikacin (Amikin), gentamicin (Garamycin), neomycin (Mycifradin, Neo-Fradin, (Neo-Tab), netilmycin (NETROMYCIN), paromomycin (Humatin, Paromycin) , streptomycin, or tobramycin (Nebcin, Tobi)
- if you have kidney disease, asthma or a sulfite allergy, or a muscle disorder such as myasthenia gravis
Is the drug Kanamycin safe for pregnant and lactating women?
There are no adequate studies regarding the risks of using this drug in pregnant or nursing women. Always consult your doctor to weigh the potential benefits and risks before using this medication. This drug is included in the risk of pregnancy category D according to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). (A = No risk, B = No risk in some studies, C = Possible risk, D = Positive evidence of risk, X = Contraindicated, N = Unknown)
Studies in women show that this drug poses minimal risk to the baby when used during breastfeeding.
Side effects
What are the possible side effects of Kanamycin?
Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: nausea, vomiting, sweating, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or feel like you might pass out.
Stop using Kanamycin and call your doctor if you have any of the following serious side effects:
- changes in your hearing;
- sensation, problems with balance such as spinning;
- ringing or roaring sound in your ears;
- numbness or tingling of your skin;
- muscle twitching, spasms (spasms); or
- urinating less than usual or not at all.
Less serious side effects may include:
- pain or irritation where the injection was given;
- mild skin rash;
- headache;
- fever; or
- nauseous vomit.
Not everyone experiences the following side effects. There may be some side effects not listed above. If you have concerns about certain side effects, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Drug Interactions
What drugs can interfere with the drug Kanamycin?

- Antiviral drugs such as adefovir (Hepsera), cidofovir (Vistide), or foscarnet (Foscavir)
- Cancer drugs such as aldesleukin (Proleukin), carmustine (BiCNU, Gliadel), cisplatin (Platinol), ifosfamide (IFEX), oxaliplatin (Eloxatin), Plikamycin (Mithracin), streptozocin (Zanosar), or tretinoin (Vesanoid)
Can certain foods and drinks interfere with the work of the drug Kanamycin?
Certain drugs should not be used with meals or when eating certain foods because drug interactions can occur. Consuming alcohol or tobacco with certain drugs can also cause interactions to occur. Discuss your use of drugs with food, alcohol, or tobacco with your health care provider.
What health conditions can interfere with the performance of the drug Kanamycin?
The presence of other health problems in your body can affect the use of this drug. Tell your doctor if you have other health problems .:
- asthma or
- sulfite allergy, this medication contains sodium bisulfite which can cause an allergic reaction in patients with this condition.
- kidney disease, severe or
- muscle problems (for example, infant botulism) or
- Myasthenia gravis (severe muscle weakness) or
- nerve problems or
- Parkinson's disease - Use with caution. It might make things worse.
- Kidney disease - Use with caution. The effect can be increased due to slower clearance of the drug from the body.

What is the dosage of Kanamycin for adults?
Usual Adult Dose for Bacterial Infections:
Parenteral: 15 mg / kg / day IM or IV in divided doses every 8-12 hours
Duration: 7-10 days
Aerosol: 250 mg in 3 mL of normal saline via a nebulizer 2-4 times daily.
Irrigation: kanamycin 2.5 mg / mL
Usual Adult Dose for Tuberculosis - Active
15 mg / kg (maximum 1 g) IM or IV every 24 hours.
What is the dosage of the drug Kanamycin for children?
Usual Children's Dose for Bacterial Infections
> = 2 kg: 15-20 mg / kg / day in divided doses every 12 hours.
> = 7 days: <2 kg: 15-22.5 mg / kg / day in divided doses every 8 hours.
> = 2 kg: 15-30 mg / kg / day in divided doses every 8 hours.
> = 1 month: 15-30 mg / kg / day in divided doses every 8 to 12 hours.
Usual Children's Dose for Tuberculosis - Active
15-30 mg / kg (maximum 1 g) IM or IV every 24 hours.
In what dosages and preparations is Kanamycin available?
Injection: 500 mg / vial, 1 g / vial.
What to do in an emergency or overdose?
In case of an emergency or overdose, contact the local emergency services provider (119) or immediately to the nearest hospital emergency department.
Overdose symptoms may include hearing problems, ringing in your ears, dizziness or problems with balance or seizures.
What should I do if I forget to take medicine or forget to take medicine?
If you forget a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, when it is nearing the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and return to the usual dosing schedule. Don't double the dose.
