Exercise is important for health. Even so, you also have to understand about the right times to exercise. The reason is, most people think that exercise during the day will burn more calories in the body making it effective for weight loss.

In fact, this is not the case. Recent research says that exercising during the day is actually ineffective and has health risks to watch out for.

Exercise at high temperatures is not good for muscle performance

A study from the University of Nebraska at Omaha shows the dangers of doing outdoor exercise when high temperatures can affect a number of muscle performance at the cellular level.

The researchers studied how exercise performed at different temperatures affected muscle performance. More specifically, they looked at how mitochondria - the energy generators in cells - are affected by various temperatures.

Mitochondria are organelles that play an important role in the respiration function of living cells. Now, when the mitochondria don't function properly, they play a major role in causing obesity, diabetes, aging and other conditions.

That's why researchers want to find out what the optimal temperature is for exercise, which can prevent mitochondrial dysfunction and potentially reduce the levels of the ailments mentioned earlier.

This study was conducted by observing samples of thigh muscle tissue from each participant before and after completing cycling exercise for one hour in a room that had different temperatures, one hot and one cold.

As a result, the researchers found that the majority of study participants performed optimally when exercising in cold temperatures compared to hot temperatures. Meanwhile, the response shown by the body when exercising in hot temperatures looks very negative, even if it doesn't work at all.

So, why is exercise during the scorching hot day dangerous for health?

Michael Bergeron, a director at the Sanford Sports and Science Institute, said that exercise on hot days, when the temperature is hot, humid, and not windy, makes sweat unable to evaporate. This causes the body to be unable to effectively remove the heat produced by the body after physical activity.

Now, when this heat loss in the body is ineffective, the body temperature will rapidly increase to dangerous levels. This is what will be harmful to your health later.

In essence, sports that are carried out at high or hot temperatures, cause the body to have difficulty dissipating heat, which causes body temperature to increase. This is of course bad, because it can cause various harmful effects to health.

This is what happens if you force yourself to do sports while you are hot

Here are some of the most common conditions that occur when you exercise at too high a temperature:

  • Muscle cramp
  • Feelings of nausea and vomiting occur
  • Dizziness or headache
  • Low blood pressure
  • Heart palpitations
  • Blurred vision
  • Dehydration
  • Fainting
  • Heat exhaustion - extreme fatigue
  • Heat stroke - heat stroke that occurs when the body temperature reaches 40 degrees Celsius

Basically, exercise is good for overall health. It's just that you have to be smart to minimize all the risks that exist so you can still get the health benefits offered from doing physical activity.

One way to do this is to avoid doing sports when sun exposure is too hot in broad daylight, wearing comfortable and thin clothing, and using waterproof sunscreen regularly.

In addition, don't forget to stay hydrated before, during, and after exercise to avoid dehydration. The reason is, if the body is already dehydrated, it will be increasingly difficult for the body to normalize its temperature again. This will certainly worsen your condition.
