Functions & Usage
What is Hyoscyamine used for?
Hyoscyamine is a medicine to treat various stomach problems / intestinal problems such as cramps and irritable bowel syndrome. This medication is also used to treat other conditions such as problems with bladder control and bowel problems, abdominal cramping pain caused by kidney stones and gallstones, and Parkinson's disease. In addition, Hyoscyamine is also used to reduce the side effects of certain drugs (drugs used to treat myasthenia gravis) and insecticides.
Hyoscyamine works by reducing acid production in the stomach, slowing down the natural movement of the intestines, and relaxing muscles in many organs (eg, stomach, intestines, bladder, kidneys, gall bladder). Hyoscyamine can also reduce the amount of certain body fluids (eg, saliva, sweat). This drug belongs to a class of drugs known as anticholinergics / antispasmodics.
